Does this book sound familiar?
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:01:33 PM »
Trying to find the title of a book a friend read in HS (she's in her late 20s now).  It sounds familiar, but I can't get the title:

A nuclear bomb was dropped on the US by the USSR iirc and it was about the aftermath of dealing with that. where basically technology was nil and surviving such a thing. and it was written at a time when it was set in like the 50s or 60s.

If it is set in Florida - By the Waters of Babylon - I remember reading it in high school (back in the mid-1970s).

If it is not set in Florida, I'm still thinking.........

On the Beach by Nevil Shute has that theme and was set in Australia (I think)

A Canticle For Lebowitz has something somewhat similar, and it has a lot of religious underthemes and stuff.  I can't remember who it's by (I read it in high school!)

I was looking around on Wikipedia in an attempt to find the book for the OP (or some suggestions):  By the Waters of Babylon is set in New York.

I think the book you are thinking of is Alas, Babylon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alas%2C_Babylon

Other than the suggestions already made, I can't seem to find anything else that fits.  Robert R. McCammon's Swan Song sort of falls along these lines, but it is set in the 80's or 90's, IIRC.

The credit goes to ReneeG on this one.  I just started looking up the titles that were suggested.  Glad you found it though!   ;D

Yep, it's Alas, Babylon.  I didn't read it in high school, but I heard about it recently and read it a few months ago.  It's a great read!

It was high school, thirty years ago or so - I remember it quoted from scripture about "by the waters of Babylon...." and that the title had Babylon in it.  Guess I at least got the KEYWORD for a Google search!
