Office Party - had to leave early, what to say?
« on: December 11, 2006, 08:56:02 AM »
We had our office party friday night, it was basically dinner at a very nice restaurant.  Just as dessert was being served, DH noticed he had a message on his cell phone.  The reception inside was very bad, so our phones never rang.

He ended up having to go outside to check the message and after he did, he came in and got me and we had to leave immediately.  Thing 2 was sick and vomiting all over MIL's house and she was really upset with us for "not answering our phones".  We called once we were en route and explained that we had no reception inside the building and were on our way.

We explained to the people at our table what happened and that we had to go, but I didn't have a chance to talk to anyone else, including my boss or the owner/CEO of my company.  I doubt they really noticed anything (we had a room at the restaurant, there were several tables and lots of people.  We weren't the first people to leave, but the others came around and said goodbye to all the tables.

Should I bring it up with the boss and owner today and apologize?  Or drop it unless they ask?

I'd probably drop it unless someone brings it up. Chances are if anyone noticed you were missing, they asked around and heard why you left early. Or they neer noticed you were no longer there. Take your office dynamics into consideration, though, If you work somewhere where there are a lot of office politics, you might want to explain it to your boss and/or the CEO.

I agree with the other posters. Unless someone specifically says, "Hey, I noticed you left the party without saying goodnight." I wouldn't bring it up. They probably didn't notice you left when you did.

It's actually a very laid back, casual company.  I doubt anyone noticed.  I just talked to a coworker who was at the table with me and knew when & why we left and she said the party pretty much wound down right after that anyway.

So, I won't make a point of saying anything.

If you told even one person at your table why you were leaving, the message has already got around to anyone who noticed you were gone and mentioned it.   You had a legitimate reason for leaving early, so to make a point of going around now and explaining could make people think you made it up.   Let sleeping dogs lie.

Anyone who has heard me talk today knows the sickness is definitely NOT made-up, LOL.

I had someone on the phone wonder if they could send me a cough drop down the phone line.  I sound that bad, ugh.

Anyway the topic has come up in general conversations today.  Some people noticed I left, some didn't, no one cared other than to ask after how the boys are feeling now.  Yay for casual workplaces!!

And I'm told I didn't miss out on much by skipping dessert.  The appetizers and meal were wonderful, but the dessert was frou frou pastry type things that I don't generally like anyway.  So I got to avoid some calories (saved 'em for the ice cream sunday I had after dinner last night, LOL)

You had a very legitimate emergency, so I don't think you need to apologize for leaving, but giving an explanation would certainly be in order if you're asked for one.

If no one noticed, I'd let it go.
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.
