And yet, my new SIL is declaring that her four year old is schizophrenic because she has temper tantrums.  She also says the four year old is bi-polar.  And that her two year old must have been molested by her father since she isn't potty trained yet.  Um, lady?  YOU have to potty train her.  It doesn't come to her automatically.

But then, I could start a whole new forum on this chick.

??? In that case, every 4 year old on the planet is schizophrenic. That means I was schizophrenic, so was my brother, and my best friend, and...

As for the potty training. I know am I not a parent, but I was under the strange impression that children were blank slates, and need to be taught things, shows what I know, huh?  :P

The godson is schizophrenic, ADHD, and diabetic

I thought schizophrenia couldn't be diagnosed until a person was an adult because a child's brain hasn't matured yet, or something like that? That's what I remember from my Child & Adolecent Psych class, but I googled it & looked at this site:
http://www1.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/77.cfm
I could look up more, but I'm tired & I don't wanna. :)

It says that schizophrenia diagnosed in kids under 10 years old is rare. I'm sorry for your sister & especially for your nephew, to be in that category. Hopefully he can benefit from ongoing research & new discoveries scientists are learning about the brain. (I hope that sentence makes sense. I'm tired & can't think well when it comes to wording when I'm ti-red. :))

I always thought the same thing - that it was a teen thing. Apparently, though, he told his mom that he hears voices yelling at him when he tries to go to sleep. The kid has been seeing a psychologist since he was about two, and has been medicated since then.
I'm not a parent, so i try not to question how much of it is for real ...  :-\

Thanks for the good thoughts. e-hellions.  :)

Not so sure about that...I toilet trained myself in one day at age three and have never made a mistake since(accidents involving the runs don't count :P).

Wow, that poor kid, I wonder what his adult life will be like.

From what I understand, part of the scary thing about schitzophrenia is it's strongly genetic, and it usually doesn't manifest until 30-40 - past the point most people have started to procreate.  So if your parent is schitzophrenic, you won't find out whether you are (and whether you could pass it on to your kids) until AFTER you've had kids, or you wait until you're 40.

Whatever maternal instinct hobgoblinish might have had, Godson crumpled up into a little ball, ripped to shreds, doused in gasoline, set on fire, encased in concrete and dropped into the ocean.

My hubby's uncle and his wife have two adorable little girls.  His aunt and her husband have 3 menaces (three boys, yikes).  When they get together though, those adorable little girls turn into menaces.  We babysat them all together once and when we got home, the parents could tell from the look on our faces they had been trouble.

First words out of hubby's uncles mouth: "Greatest form of birth contorl ever invented."

We still say it to each other when any of the cousins act up.
