Military Ball - or was that Bawl?
« on: December 10, 2006, 06:32:43 PM »
We went to a military ball last night.  The food was good, the students were well dressed and mostly well behaved.  The color guard brought in the flags nicely, the saber team formed an arch for the "court" to be presented thru, and the change of command ceremony went well.

The issues BEGAN when the dance "music" started........after the third "song" that was all drums and unintelligible mumbling - the CDs were switched to a radio station.  After the second "song" that we could understand the (not acceptable) language in the lyrics, the radio station was switched to soft jazz.  The volume was still high enough to scramble eggs in the shell from the vibration - while helping with cleanup, I picked up the cash box (ticket sales).  It was buzzing in my hands...........

After last dance at 10:45 pm, the last of the parents showed up at 11:30 pm.

The staff was rearranging the lobby area of the venue when a bottle of shoe polish (actually edge dressing - which dries rather rubbery and can only be removed with a sand blaster........) was found on a picture frame.  And under an overstuffed arm chair that was out of place, there were three blotches of BLACK on the carpet............someone on the saber team or possibly the color guard DIDN'T do their shoe polishing at home........and got something on the carpet.......and tried to HIDE it instead of owning up.

I won't do more than mention the accident that set one of the folding tables trying to fold up while still set with a burning candle in the centerpiece - THAT was recognized as an accident by all the staff, guests, teachers, and chaperones - even if there were some broken glasses and plates.........

But the lead teacher and his wife (yeah, VorFemme by name) ended up back at the club this morning with a steam cleaner, a scrub brush, carpet cleaning fluid, and towels - hoping that the stuff could be removed without the school having to PAY for all new carpet in the lobby and two halls.........

It looks like the kids lucked out - although the NEXT military ball will have a lot more "hands-on" approach with the teachers checking that the location has been arranged ahead of time (do not call restaurants and clubs during lunch to talk to a caterer or reserve a location), the music for any dancing will have to be "auditioned" (no rap with lyrics not suitable for mixed company - whether gender or age are used as the criteria), and the kids will be told that if they aren't READY before the party - they can't get ready AT the party.

One couple turned up over an hour late because her hair stylist ran late...........

Another couple failed to show up for unknown reasons - DH is wondering if there will be a parent (known as a Hominid Jerkus) will be in his face tomorrow about THAT situation.........

And his wife is rather upset about having to spend her Sunday morning steam cleaning a three foot by five foot patch of carpet.........

The absolute sheer and utter joy of teenagers!! How fun for you!! I think that your husband should try his best to suss out who damaged that rug so that you can be reimbursed for the steam cleaning and so that you can get the apology you deserve. And to teach the little numbskull about responsibility. Pull that kind of stunt in the real military and see what happens to you!!
I think that in the future you might want to make a professional cleaning crew's fee part of the ticket price (oh if only that was possible)....

The steam cleaning cost me about a half cup of cleaning fluid from the bottle I keep in the laundry room* and the TIME to run down there and do the cleaning...........call it about two hours of my Sunday morning (the club is closed on Mondays or we might have waited a bit).

And DH is planning on sussing out "whodunit" as if no one steps forward and owns up (or snitches) there will be no future military balls.  They can stick to Dining Outs in the school "commons" (sometimes called "cafeteria", for an idea of the lovely atmosphere available).

No prom dresses for the girls and no "dates" since it would be a military only "function".

*cat, teenaged son, and I am not the most graceful of people.........I do not wear white unless I am drinking water.........I can spill anything!

Time is valuable, I bet you had other plans that had to wait while you were down there cleaning. I hate that future balls are out, not really any fun for those who do know how to behave. But maybe they will put some pressure on the twits in the gang and your next event will be nicer.
I am glad to hear that your hubby is going to try to find the kid who spoiled the floor. It's only fair that he or she should get some kind of comeuppance, even if it's just a stern lecture. Your hubby can send them to my house to clean latrines!!
About the wearing white, I am famous for messing up clothes of all colors. One of my favorite shirts is black with a 3 inch white stripe with a red center across it. Guess which part of the shirt I always get sauce on???

Highschool was about 6 years ago from me but my school had the "if one person does something wrong then they all suffer" policy... Doesnt it seem harsh? Or maybe I'm reading this wrong....

If it makes you feel better, I once hosted a military renion- a bunch of very retired military guys, and know what one of them did on our brand new 10,000 sqfoot carpet? Spary painted the flag bases without putting down any paper.

He ended up paying for the carpet cleaning himself, because the organizer had no sympathy. So they might not even learn when they get older. ;)
