Chritmas Bonuses problem
« on: December 11, 2006, 12:35:06 PM »
work at a university. In my former position I got a small, but much appreciated Christmas bonus, which was collected by the faculty and presented to the staff and housekeeping crew at the holiday party. The university itself does not give out bonuses, so any bonuses given out are done by employee collection...I don't what to think about that as i have never worked anywhere they gave bonuses before, either by the employer itself or by collection.

I changed jobs recently and moved to a new department. An email went around soliciting staff to donute money to a holiday bonus gift for housekeeping. I chipped in some money and asked about when staff could expect to receive our bonuses. I was told staffers don't get a bonus, only housekeeping, which says to me that housekeeping's work is more valued than mine (it is important what they do, but still).

I also found out only staff contribute to the housekeeping's bonus...faculty don't contribute anything at all. Basically, faculty make more money than 2-3 staffers put together and don't give anything back to show appreciation...this dept., I have learned, has a long history of the faculty treating the staff like peons, when most of us are highly trained professionals ourselves, not typing pool coffee-makers of days long gone.

Am I right to be annoyed over this? The lack of a bonus itself is not what's bothering me, as it's the fact that the professors don't bother to contribute anything themselves, when they are the ones who receive the most benefits from the efforts of the staff and housekeeping. I mean, really it makes me feel like they don't give a darn about any of us. It's an unpleasant thought that makes me wonder if I did the right things changing jobs.

I can see why housekeeping receives the bonus because, pay-wise, they are lowest on the totem pole.  It isn't right, however, that only half of of the employees who benefit from housekeeping's services should donate to the bonus pool.   In the scheme of things, it wouldn't be right to penalize housekeeping because of it and withhold a bonus in the future.   It would be right, however, to:

a)  Clearly state that the bonus is from the staff (conveniently leaving off any mention of faculty)
b)  Have the staff supervisor meet with the department dean after the holidays to discuss the situation to
see if this situation can be rectified for future years.

As far as your position goes, only you can decide if the work environment and if your pay, sans any hope of bonus, is satisfying enough to stay.

well the professors should certainly contribute for the janitorial staff as well but I think it odd for salaried staff to think other employees should give them a bonus at Christmas.  the janitorial staff is generally very poorly paid and it is decent to do this for them -- but ALL the staff?  most faculty don't make all that much in universities -- often not much more than professional staff.  It isn't up to employees to make each other's bonuses.  many universities forbid this type of collection for perhaps this reason.

you had a cushy deal in the other department -- one I have never heard of before i.e. faculty giving admin staff money -- now you dn't.  it is not a reason to be disgruntled about the current place.

I know the students in my dorm all chipped in for a Christmas bonus for our housekeeping staff (ended up being about $200 for each of the two housekeepers), because the University didn't do squat.  We also had an appreciation breakfast for them each year.  I don't know what happened for all the housekeeping and other staff that didn't have a residential house like ours, though (we were kind of like a co-ed fraternity, so people stayed year after year).  Probably didn't get anything.

Christmas bonuses are nice, but, well, they're bonuses.  IMHO, they're in that category of "things to be glad about when they happen they way you want, but you can't say or do anything about if they're not done right."  Kind of like your mother-in-law's broccoli casserole or your church choir director's choice of music.
