Spin off thread....Dark Tower discussions (WARNING: Here there be SPOILERS)
Rei-chan:
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!
Having recently read the other Dark Tower thread, I quickly figured out that some of us couldn't talk freely without fear of spoiling other readers that haven't finished the series yet. So, I decided to start a thread where we could debate the series. Here goes:
- How did you feel about the series as a whole?
- Best/worst part?
- What were you expecting from the series that you didn't see realized?
My answers:
- I love the series up until Book 7. That book felt rushed and IMO jumped the shark, especially the last few chapters dealing with Patrick Danville and the Crimson King. More about this later.....
- Best part: The final fight in Wizard and Glass. Worst part: The death of Flagg. I felt it was too easy.
- I was really expecting more crossovers than I got. I mean, when a series is touched on in so many of the other non-Tower books, especially to the point of there being a LIST of Tower related books in Book 5, I was expecting to see Jack (The Talisman/Black House) and the boys from Eyes of the Dragon, and although Patrick (from Insomnia) did make an appearance, it turned into a cop out.
So, I leave it to fellow readers.....what's your opinion? I hope to see some interesting responses/debates! ;D
Rei-chan:
Well, here's the thing about SK stories and me: I own almost all of the books in hardcover, as my Dad started collecting them before I was born, and passed them on over the years. I actually started the DT series with Waste Lands, as Dad didn't realize it was part of a series (he just saw it was SK and bought it) then went back and read the first 2 books.
Between books 3 and 4, I started picking up "clues" from other SK books that some of them crossed (i.e. Flagg in EOTD and The Stand) and started digging as newer books came out. After reading book 4, there were years with no new Tower book, but I kept finding references in the new books. I had it so bad that every time I found a reference I would SCREAM to DH "The Tower is closer!" and he would laugh at me. In Insomnia, when Patrick turns to his Mom and says "His name's Roland. Him's a gunslinger" I got CHILLS.
Wow, in re-reading this last post, I just realized I sound a bit like a junkie.....LOL.
Anyway, my point was that here I was, expecting all this great stuff, and then....NOTHING. It was like digging into an ice cream sundae and it tastes like wet cardboard. Here's my take on what should have happened:
- Big fight with Flagg
- Jake makes it to the Tower with Roland, but dies in the final fight
- The King should have been a formidable enemy, worse than Flagg. Not some doddering freak that stood on a balcony and threw sneetches till Patrick ERASED him.
- Jack should have made an appearance somewhere along the way.
- It would have been cool if Flagg's demise would have been at the hands of the boys from EOTD.
I'm sure there's more, but I have to think on it..... ;D

Ugh, I would love to participate but it's been two years since I read the books and being stuck in the bacwaters of Romania, rereading isn't an option at the moment. Sorry :(
Rei-chan:
That's OK Lunadiana....but if you change your mind, you are always welcome :)
Lunadiana75:
My recollections are pretty surface and vague.
