lol, as a Jew, I really cant see what the problem is..

Replacing adjectives with nouns is generally bad for when talking about people because it's dehumanising. Saying "Brits" instead of "British person" isn't a problems right now, but when the whole world hates British people and there is talk about drumming them out of town calling them "Brits" instead of "British people" helps separate you from them. This in turn makes it easier to do and say things to and about "Brits" that you wouldn't do about "normal people".

However, we live in an imperfect society and whilst we must be careful about labelling there are some uses that aren't obviously offensive all the time.

no, it's not offensive. (I'm jewish).

The only way it could be considered offensive is if it were used as a derogative verb ---- 'to jew someone' used to be used to describe 'cheating' someone.

The thing I don't understand is, if you're not supposed to use proper nouns, then you shouldn't use the word "Jew" meaning a person who follows Judaism.

Which means the only meaning allowed is the slur one.

Sort of like you can use the word "china," meaning your good dishes, but not the word "China," the country that just had the Olympics.  "Catholic" meaning the religion vs. "catholic" meaning broad minded.  "French" meaning from France vs. "french" meaning to cut into strips.  "Scrabble" meaning the game vs. "scrabble" meaning to scratch with claws.

Except that "catholic," "french," "scrabble," and "china" aren't slurs, so they can be used in polite Scrabble.

I am an Orthodox Jew living in Isael.  Oh my goodness, that means I just refered to myself in a racist term.  Oiy !!!!!  I am a racist.    ;D 8) :P >:D

While Judaism is a religioun, it is also a way of life, so it might be a mixture of many things.

sufganiyot !!!! lol.. 2 weeks before Hanukah they make their appearance en masse.. in schools, gans, work, friends houses, Chabad giving them out in the street.. even our bank gives you a sufganiya  when you go in to get extorted by them( lol) ... by the first day of Hanukah you begin to be sick of them...especially when they are a few hours old, get hard, and the sugar on top turns translucent.... by the end of Hanukah you are totally off them and can't even see one without getting a tummy ache ... until next Hanukah..lol
In recent years, we've gotten sufganiyot with all kinds of " exotic" fillings.. like dulce de leche and chalva.... but  I still like the jams ones the best.
 and booooooooooooooooy are they fattening.

That's how I am with Matzot.  First couple days of Passover, I can't get enough of it.  By Day 8, I never want to see it again!

Carmel filled sufganiyot from Me'ah Sharim...oh, my goodness, every Chanukah when I bite into a jelly filled one (or the ones that my neighbor makes with NO filling (not pleasant)), I dream of catching a plane to Israel that very moment for some carmel filled ones...

*I so desperately want to quote the "I'm not a Roman!" scene from "Life of Brian" right now, but that DOES contain offensive terms.

Jews are actually a race.   I was born from a Jewish father and mother, so I remain a Jew until I die.

I have to admit, I was going to refute this, but when I went to get the article that I planned to refute it with, I found that I was wrong.

A male receives his y-chromosome unchanged from his father.  Barring mutation, this chromosome should be identical if traced back through the patrilineal line.  Studies of y-chromosomes have been used to chart human migration, the male equivalent of the more famous mitochondrial DNA studies that were popularized in books like The Seven Daughters of Eve (which totally ignores the fact that there are an additional 12 mitochondrial DNA lines in Africa, but Nineteen Daughters just doesn't scan).

Anywho, if the Kohens are descended from Aaron, they should all have the same y-chromosome.  And in a study of 188 Jews from Israel, England, and North America, of 106-self described Kohens, 97 had what is now called the Cohan Modal Haplotype.
http://www.cohen-levi.org/jewish_genes_and_genealogy/the_dna_chain_of_tradition.htm

I was aware of the CMH prevalence, but I was going to argue that non-Kohens are not necessarily part of that race.  After all, my family is not descended from the Hebrews, but from the Kuzar tribe, which once lived in what is now Turkey, but which migrated into what is now the Ukraine about 1500 years ago and converted to Judaism about 300 years later.  I read this in a book on patterns in human migration, and it was confirmed by my cousin, who is a Talmudic scholar.

However, based on genetic studies, "This genetic research has clearly refuted the once-current libel that the Ashkenazi Jews are not related to the ancient Hebrews, but are descendants of the Kuzar tribe--a pre-10th century Turko-Asian empire which reportedly converted en masse to Judaism. Researchers compared the DNA signature of the Ashkenazi Jews against those of Turkish-derived people, and found no correspondence."

The computer game has these little mini-games to PRACTICE getting rid of even two or three tiles to get a few extra points - even if you CAN'T put down a whole row of tiles.

What came to my mind was how to add a few more tiles to that row to turn jew into jewel or even jewelry..........

I gotta find someone to play Scrabble with besides the computer..........

Boy, you can tell it's been a long time since I played Scrabble --didn't know you couldn't use proper nouns.  We always did.

Back on topic.  I have many Jewish friends, all of whom I asked today definitely stated they would not be offended.  Also, you quite often see newspaper articles on Orthodox Jews, etc.  I'm thinking someone really had to think up a reason for you not to win or to try and have you not win.
