Years (and years and years) ago, the director of my library was a loonie-toon we will call, simply Toonie.  I think I may have posted about her on the website called "Bad Bosses."

One year a co-worker and I both applied for a position that would have been a raise AND a responsiblity upgrade (one of us would be in charge of a branch).   It's also important to know that at this time a) my mother had been in and out of the hospital for heart trouble and b) had recently had multiple bypass surgery.  By the time this story takes place, Mom was up and around and on vacation in Washington D.C.

It is also important to know that Toonie's parents were both elderly and frail, and so this may excuse what happened after my interview.  But it still steams me.

When Toonie had made her decision about which of us should get the position, she called me to her office to explain WHY I didn't get the position.  I didn't really need to know or care.  The co-worker had been there three years longer and had a lot more experience running a department.  But Toonie apparently felt it was necessary to embarrass both of us by--well, I can only describe what she did first.

Toonie:  Now when I asked question X, YOU said.....(followed by comments), but Cow-worker said (followed by what co-worker said--a blatant invasion of her privacy as well as mine.)  She did this for each and every question.  What I found most amusing was that co-worker and I had said exactly the same things...we'd just coached them in different phrases.

THEN, in order to be buddy-buddy with me, Toonie asked me about my mother's health.  I said "Oh, she's fine, Toonie.  She came thru by-pass like a pro and she's in charge again and stronger than ever."

Toonie said "I know.  Isn't it hard when they're just lying there and dying and you can't do anything for them?" ???

I said "Yes, it is, but Mom's really fine.  She's on vacation with my Dad as we speak and..."

Toonie cut me off.  "Oh, and you know, she's only get worse and soon she'll be at a point where all you can do is read to her."

I came back with "Well, I'm sure that's waaaaaay off in the future, Toonie, but right now--"

"So you'd better brace youself, it'll happen sooner than you think, you know.  And you'll be cleaning her up after the bathroom and..."

I said "My mother is alive and well and healthy as a horse according to her doctor.  Why are you trying to bury her now?"

"Oh, I didn't mean to upset you, but I think you should be prepared for the worst, you know."

I don't remember what else was said, nor do I remember how I got out of her office without killing her.  Days later I learned that Toonie's parents were both falling ill and it was incumbent upon her and her siblings to take care of them.  Toonie was upset about them being so sick.  I suppose she had parents on the brain, but I don't understand why she felt compelled to transfer all that on to my Mom (who did die, about thirteen years later, after a pretty good run with a disease that would have toppled most people).

When Toonie finally left for a new job (in the midst of a huge layoff that SHE initiated and that didn't have to happen if she had cooperated with the city officials) she told me not to get too comfortable just because my job had been spared.  "The ax can fall at any time," she said "and it was just luck it swung beneath your toes." :o

I'm pleased as punch to announce that, at her new job, Toonie was escorted out by police officers after being fired and refusing to leave.  She went on to a new job from which she was also fired a few months later.  The woman is a walking disaster.  Occasionally I wonder what happened to her, but to be honest--I don't care a whole lot.  I think a competent therapist could make lots of money hauling away her baggage, though.

I know I have scoliosis, thank you very much, as I've lived with it every day of my 31 years, and pointing out that it makes me "disfigured," "ugly," "abnormal," etc is going to point out to me that you're a rude, shallow, narrow-minded person I don't want to waste my time with anyway.

Good heavens, I saw the pictures you posted and you certainly don't look "disfigured" or "ugly." You look really cute ;)

Can I further make your day by asking just what is it about your appearance that makes your scoliosis obvious?? I think you're a pretty lady (girl??How old are you?? And if you say you're older than me I'm going to mash you)....
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

Rude thing that happened to me:
I've got a small business that is in the wedding industry, and I get calls from publications asking me to buy advertising all the time. I'm very familiar with all of the titles available on magazine shelves, and with how much these things cost and my end of the market.

Well one day I got a call from a guy trying to sell me an ad within a magazine that he claimed was going to be produced exclusively for distribution at a major London wedding show I was going to be exhibiting at. I was rather skeptical as I didn't recognize the title, and knew the show organisers had their own in-house publication of that nature that was handed out at the show.

So, in an attempt to get the guy off the phone I asked how much this would cost me as I could then say I didn't have the money in my advertising budget. Well, boy did I not have the money! He told me £3000! Oh for heaven's sake! Had he done no research into who he was calling? My business is successful and I make a living, but I'm a one woman operation and I certainly don't have the budget to blow £3000 on one ad. I'd spread that kind of money out over many different advertising options. Which is a long way of saying that I pretty much laughed out loud when he told me.

So now, the rude bit:
Me: Are you kidding?!!? I can't afford those kind of fees for an ad!
Him: So that doesn't get you wet then?"
Me: :o

I stuttered an "I beg your pardon?" at him, to which he stuttered an, "er, um, you're not interested then?" I ended up hanging up on him, of course wishing I had the presence of mind to come up with something far more devasting to make him feel like an idiot - wished I'd asked the name of his manager, etc. But after doing some research I think it was one of those, give us money for an ad that we will never publish kind of scam type deals, so the manager probably wouldn't have cared anyway.

Ew.

About 10 years ago, my company hired a new person to work in my department. At that time, I'd been working for them about 8 years (our department is "knowledge-based" and we do a lot of training for our customers). New hire was brought in and introduced to me.

First words out of his mouth. "Hi, I'm [new hire]. You can call me a Frog if you want to!"

Me: (spluttering uncomfortably with the assumption I would want to call him a racial epithet)...

Second sentence: "I've been reviewing your
  • course material. It's absolute garbage - I'd be embarrassed to present it to anyone."

Me: "Um, I wrote it." (Wonders if this is why he has to give people prior permission to call him nasty names.)

My boss couldn't figure out why it took me several years to "warm up" to new hire.

I was at a bar with my then BF and a friend. The guy next to me who is in his 40's started talking to me and at first it was a nice friendly conversation, then he says "you're so pretty, why aren't you married?" The rudest question to ask a single girl ever, but I figured this guy didn't really mean anything by it. So I smile and say, well I'm only 27 I still have plenty of time for that. He says, well exactly, you're 27 you should have already been married by now, what are you waiting for your looks to go away?  Still trying to maintain my cool, I don't think they're going anywhere for a while and I really am not interested, I am only 27. He continues: Exactly you're 27 you're already a spinster I think you should do something about it.  My then BF quickly puts his arm around me and directs me to a nearby table. It was a good thing because I was just about to slug him.

I'm now 37 and still don't think my looks have gone away and still not in a huge hurry to get married, if it happens it does, but I don't define my self worth around the ability to get married.

Actually I could go on about the number of people who think it's their duty to make all happy succesful women in the world feel like freaks just because they aren't married. But he was the only one I wanted to slug over it.

I still haven't figured it out myself. *shrugs* I mean, I know my torso's a little shorter than average and there's little things here and there that point out that something is "not quite right" to the person who's looking to not make my day by criticizing me and making rude remarks my way. But the people who love me ignore it and see past it. :)

And I thought the comment about me having lived with scoliosis for "all 31 years of my life" made it obvious.  :P I'll be 32 in March. Scary thought!

Of course your looks haven't faded and you're not a spinster! I'm 31 and I'm not married yet either - nor do I want to be for a while. If at all!

My youngest aunt was married for the first time at 22 and that didn't last...second time around she was 34. She had her 2 children at the ages of 35 and 37. She's 39 now, and still looks 25, so her looks haven't faded a bit. And when people initially meet me they think I'm no older than 23-24.

Obviously, most men haven't caught on to the "30 is the new 20" trend. It totally is. I feel so much more confident and successful and self-possessed at 31 than I was ever capable of at 21.

Sheesh.

Ms Moonbunny...okay I'll let you remain unmashed, I'm turning 32 in August. I must have missed where you mentioned how long you've had scoliosis. If I may ask a personal question (and ignore it if it's not my business) but have you had any corrective procedures? I ask because my Granny has scoliosis and a few years ago (after years of excruciating pain) she had a pretty radical surgery to do what they could with hers to try to ease some of the pain she was in (she really has suffered and the surgery only did a moderate amount of good. Two years later she had a masectomy and a hip replacement within months of each other. She says she's going to start throwing body parts into her plot at Woodlawn...). I was wondering if she waited too late to have something done...not that there was a lot they could do when she was a girl...

Yes, those people are some of the worst, aren't they?  (Of course, we had a whole thread about this on the previous Forum.)  One can't help but think they're jealous in some way.

Tell me about it.

Many women of my mother's generation seriously envied their daughters' freedom and their choices.  Think about how many things made that possible:  education, birth control, and technology.  And some of the rules got changed, which was harder for them to accept.

This happened about 12-13 years ago, but it's something that still flabbergasts me even if it wasn't as horrible as what happened to others before me. At the time I lived in an area in southern NY with a large population of Hassidic Jews (I'll be good and not post my views on the "charming" critters) who make some of the more rigid Orthodox Jews look like revolutionaries, but one of their rules for women is that they always have to wear a head covering of some sort and either a long sleeved, floor length dress, or a blouse/skirt combination. When this incident happened it was in late november/early december, but it was a fairly mild winter day so I hadn't bothered with a heavy coat, simply boots, warm pants and a lovely turtleneck with a baggy pull over sweater (the turtleneck and sweater looked as if they were a matching set,but weren't I was just lucky when I bought them). I'd gone to a local store with my mother where this happened.

I crouch down to look at something, my mother was somewhere else in the store, when I feel something wet on my cheek, without thinking about it, I wipe my face and look up for a leak from the ceiling. Ceiling looks fine when I feel it again, this time I look around and there's this little Hassidic boy next to me who spits on me! Again! So I politley tell him that's not a very nice thing to do. So he spits on me again! This time I'm a little more firm and another customer nearby who was older called him on his actions as well since she'd came over to see what the problem was the first time I said something. The little boy doesn't say anything, just sort of sneers, then scampered off. About 15-20 minutes go by and at that point the whole thing with the kid was "out of sight, out of mind" when my mother comes rushing up to me all flustered and somewhat angry at me wanting to know why I hit someone's little boy.

She gets a completely blank look out of me because I hadn't hit a child nor am I the type to do so no matter how angry I get, and she knew this too. Finally I calm her down and get her to take me to go see the mother to see what was going on. Sure enough the child in question was the disgusting little boy who was spitting on me. So I confront the mother trying to be as polite as possible about the whole thing, fortunately the other customer was nearby and backed me up. Just then the manager comes up to see what the fuss is (another woman who was in nice dress blouse and slacks). When she hears what's going on she orders the woman to leave the store with her child since I wasn't the only one the kid was spitting on. Just before the woman leaves, she gets very huffy and states "Fine, I'll leave, but I don't see why I have to listen to lying whores like all three of you obviously are. And if my son did spit on you, you deserved it for not dressing like proper women."

I try to be respectful of other people's beliefs, but that was just...ugh.

Wow, so much for living in 'the free country'

Reika, the mind boggles at stuff like that.  That child will have more than a few problems in the future.

Not to mention that ever other Jewish person I have ever known in my life would have more than a few choice words about this.
