Is there a person on the list who speaks Yiddish or Hebrew who could tell us the proper phrase to say to someone in this circumstance?  I am sure that ALL languages have a sarcastic phrase for "young, rude person who is ill behaved" - although the rough synonyms "whippersnapper", "ill-bred brat", and "rude jerk" may not literally translate into Hebrew or Yiddish.

I suppose I could Google a phrase - but someone who "speaks" the language would have a better feel for a comment that a stranger could make that would not cause a fist-fight to break out but would embarress the one called on their behaviour.  We can hope that there is such a phrase, at least.

In the American South, "you kiss your mother with that mouth" is sometimes used when someone has been using language unbecoming to the situation.  Unfortunately, lately all too many of the kids today have mothers are the ones cursing fit to make a WWII sailor blush..............as that sailor would have been raised NOT to use that kind of language around a female!

Today, I can hear those terms used to describe the "music" being played on the boom box of kids walking by - perhaps even sung as part of the "music".  (Quotes around music are deliberate - as THAT is not what I grew up understanding as part of the vocabulary of musicians when playing or singing.  Perhaps when their expensive instrument got broken...........but not as part of the performance!)

Let sleeping dragons be.......morning breath......need I say more?

Dragons8 and Venus193: Be thankful you've never encountered Hassidic Jews, they're in a negative class all of their own, most other Jews would consider them a cult since they tend to warp most of the teachings into something that's not really recognizable to anyone as Judaism even to those of us who are hopelessly gentile. Things that ticked the rest of us off in that area were the fact that many of the men worked in high paying jobs (bankers, jewelers, etc) but because they supposedly donated all of their money to their temple so that they were all on welfare and because they were large families (usually 3+ kids) they got a lot of money and food stamps. They insisted on having their own schools, but insisted that the state pay for them even though children from other areas weren't allowed into them, their shennanigans with the schools got them kicked up to the US Supreme Court who ruled what they were doing was unconstitutional (the schools were religious in nature and state funded...). Shortly before I moved from the area federal investigators were starting to look into that town because of a series of suspicious fires that they wouldn't let the fire department check for arson. There were also issues with their families in Brooklyn and other parts of NYC, but the only ones I remember involved voter fraud.

All in all the town these people lived in had a really bad rep, their citizens had an even worse rep and it reflected really badly on Jews in general, even though the local Jewish population were probably the most vocal against them which I don't blame them on at all.

ReneeG1957: I believe there are some yiddish terms, but I was never taught them (my mother's second ex was Jewish and his parents knew yiddish but didn't teach me that much).

The only Yiddish I know that describes ill behavior is "yenta", but that means "female dog" I think....

Reika, a Jewish friend of mine (who was raised Conservative and married a man who was raised Reform) used to refer to them as the "Jewish Amish."  I understood from a PBS documentary that most of them do not attend college because they attempt to lock out the secular world to the degree they can.  While they have electricity in their homes, 95% of them do not have radios and virtually none of them have televsion.  Business owners read the WSJ and NYT, but virtually no one else does.

There is a wonderful novel called The Romance Reader by Pearl Abraham, who was raised in this manner.  As the oldest daughter of a large family she had to assume responsibilities for her younger siblings at a younger age than most girls.  She would be given money to buy her younger siblings' clothes from Goodwill and if she had a quarter or two left she would buy Harlequin paperbacks and hide them under her mattress...

The Yiddish I know that I would use in that situation is not something I would let my daughter say ;)

Sadly, I can believe it and Jewish Amish is the most polite way I've heard them described. I really try not to be prejudiced against certain religious beliefs, but I admit I've always had problems relating to the Hassidics. Especially after working in the supermarket for over 2 years and dealing with their deplorable behavior. I'm sure there's quite a few of them who are actually really nice people, but as far as I'm aware I never met any of them.

AlidaDmed, that was along the lines of what I was frequently told myself. ;)

[I'm now 37 and still don't think my looks have gone away and still not in a huge hurry to get married, if it happens it does, but I don't define my self worth around the ability to get married.

Actually I could go on about the number of people who think it's their duty to make all happy succesful women in the world feel like freaks just because they aren't married. But he was the only one I wanted to slug over it.

THIS particular post is amazing. And also one of those wierd coincidences.  This past week I read a book for all us ladies who are of a certain age (or even older than a certain age) who are sick and bloody tired of having to hear "You're so pretty/smart/sexy/fill in your own adjective/ why aren't you married?"    The title is Singled Out  by Bella DePaulo.  Some of it is excrutiatingly political but so much of what she says has been my experience, especially the suggestion that you can't be happy/complete if you aren't also married.  I wonder sometimes if they're just jealous and want us all to be as miserable as they are. ;)

I've only had dealings with Hassidic people once, and I must say that they treated me with perfect politeness, although they do have some unusual customs (for example, they can't touch a woman even to shake hands). They did think it was rather strange that I didn't know my own cell-phone number, but they managed to tolerate my oddness as well.

I'm afraid that the tone of this thread is veering into unpleasantness.

There is an interesting but flawed mystery film called A Stranger Among Us, which is sort of the flip of Witness.  Melanie Griffith plays a detective who goes undercover in the Hassidic community to solve the murder of a young diamond cutter and has to learn their customs in order to pass.  The Hassidic characters are presented sympathetically, but definitely with the viewpoint that they are vulnerable because of their isolation.  That probably makes for tension that doesn't make for positive interaction.

<mod hat on>

I am absolutely appalled at the turn this thread has taken.  Insulting entire religious groups is not a part of any civilized conversation, let alone germane to a discussion on an etiquette forum.

Cyndi, for your insult to Jehovah's Witnesses; ReneeG1957, for your request for an ethnic insult; and Reika, for your nasty generalizations about Hassidic Jews: You are on notice.  Mind your manners.

Twik and venus193, thank you for staying out of it.
