Server slow downs
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:13:14 PM »
Occasionally you all will notice there is a slow down of the server resulting in pages that take forever to load or a failure to connect to the database.  Being that the forum is still on a shared server (fewer clients but still shared), sometimes the other server clients do things that inpact the shared CPU.  It seems that Fridays between 11 and 1 pm est, one of the businesses sends out a weekly newsletter which overwhelms the CPU.  Sometimes the forum isn't affected, sometimes it is.  When I see the CPU load averages spike, I call tech support immediately before the entire server crashes.  Tech support may have to reboot the server if the CPU spike does not decrease, which is what happened today, which then disconnects readers from the forum.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience but a few minutes of down time while the server is rebooting is better than the site being down for hours.  At some point the forum and web site will move to our own server (not shared with anyone).

I just think it's ironic that an ETIQUETTE forum is being accused of monopolizing a shared server.....since monopolizing shared resources is a major etiquette faux-pas, lol.
