And again with the cell phone!
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:54:16 PM »
I ran into a K-Mart today to pick up something.  At the door was a Salvation Army guy with his kettle and bell.  I have no problem with this.

What was strange was, he was talking on his cell phone when I went in!  I don't know why this surprised me so much, but it just seemed...odd.  I guess it's no stranger than anywhere else people talk on them.  These people are volunteers and as entitled as anyone to make a quick call, I guess.  Still- something about it was just off putting.  It was like when you're a kid and see your teacher away from school- the realization that they're human and have lives outside of the context that you've placed this person in.

I just thought it was funny- my reaction, more than anything.

I had a similar experience tonight!

I was coming out of Albertson's (a grocery store) and the Salvation Army guy was on his cell phone.  I could tell from the conversation, though, that he was talking to another bell ringer to see if that guy was doing as poorly as the Albertson's guy.  Evidently, he could still see the bottom of his bucket and was listing the denominations of bills that were in there.

I wonder if they have daily goals or anything...

But, yeah, it struck me, too, that it was odd to me that the S.A. guy was on his cell phone while manning his bell & bucket.   :)

I think they do, and they most definitely look at amounts collected when figuring out locations.
