Well, since we're coming up with reasons why the employee might have been rude, I have some:

- Aliens might have abducted her the night before and run experiments on her
- Mulder might have needed her to help him out with an X-File.
- Her cat might have been infected with Kryptonite, turned gigantic and trampled the house
- Maybe she went back in time and didn't feel like living that part of the day over in the same way
- She might be a Replicator, and Replicators hate humans, so she didn't want to serve you

Come on, sometimes the excuses that people come up with for others' rudeness border on ridiculous. What did we call that on the old version of the forum? The "doctor's certificate"? Something like that. Not everybody has some dire problem that causes them to be rude. Sometimes people are just rude!

I'm with you. :)   IMO even if they are having a bad day it's not an excuse for being rude to customers. (I mean baltently rude not just kind of distracted.)  When I worked retail although my boss was sympathetic to problems there was no excuse for rudness.  If your problem interfears with doing your job properly (which includes being courtious) you should stay home or ask to work in the back.

But what if she's not a rude person; what if she's usually sweet and even-tempered, but the OP caught her the one time she was frazzled and upset.  I mean, it's also pretty bad to assume somebody is rude, rude, rude, when she only said one sentence to you.  It was still rude, and no excuse, but there's a difference between being rude and being a rude person.

I too have worked fast food hell, and I know there could have been any number of reasons why the girl was having a bad day, but it still doesn't give her leeway to be rude to somebody just because they had the audacity (gasp!) to walk into her unlocked and "open" store.

I agree with the others who said that unless this girl has had many problems in the past, she won't get fired over a call to the manager.

It doesn't matter.  I'm dealing with that person at that particular place and time.  I have no idea what's going on with her inside her mind, with her family, with her friends, or whatever.  All I know is, I placed an order and expect it to be dealt with professionally.  If that's a problem for this person, I'd prefer it if they either 1) get over themselves enough to process my order without engaging in passive-aggressiveness, moodiness, or insolence or 2) ask another person to handle it (politely).

As you said, rudeness is rudeness regardless of whether the person is just having an off day or is perpetually rude.  If you're in customer service (that to my thinking includes sales, receptionists, restaurant staff, and any number of other jobs), you owe it to the customer to keep your personal business to yourself when you handle their order, and if you can't do that, you get someone else to handle the customer.  You don't engage in rudeness of your own no matter how provoked you feel at the moment.

"Nothings ready, I just got here! It won't be ready till 8:30"

I don't think one instance of rudeness warrants a phone call.
Its odd that they would be 'open' and not ready for customers, though. If shes that bad of an employee, turning away customers like that I'm sure she doesn't need the extra help getting fired.

Speaking of Subway, I once had an exchange there as follows:

Me:            Hi, could I please have a 6" veggies and cheese sub on brown?
Employee:   White or brown?
Me:            Brown, please.
E:              Would you like cheese on that?
Me:            Yes, veggies and cheese.
E:              What veggies would you like?
Me:            Lettuce, tomato, green pepper, and onion
E:              Would you like lettuce?
Me:            Yes please.
E:              And what other veggies?
Me:            Tomato, green pepper, and onion
(Employee puts on the tomato...): any other veggies?
Me:            OK, yes, green pepper (waits for green pepper to be added)....and now onions
E:              Mustard, mayonnaise?
Me:            Just a little mustard
E:             (Picks up mayonnaise)
Me:            No, no mayonnaise, thanks....just a little mustard
E:               Salt and Pepper?
Me:             yes

Then I walked back to work with my sandwich and explained in great detail to my co-worker why my break took so long.

LOL...I've had that problem with Subway too.  I've just learned to wait until I am prompted instead of telling them ahead of time what I want.

Some places have a policy where they open at, say, 8 a.m., but the person who is scheduled to open is sheduled to start work at 8 a.m. and they're not paid for coming in earlier.  I used to work at a place like that; we opened at 6 a.m., but if you came in earlier than that you were working for free because the company was very hard-nosed about paying for overtime.  When I managed a store I tried to schedule people to come in at 5:30 so they could stock, etc. and be ready to open at 6 a.m., but I was informed that it "wasn't company policy."

I wish I was surprised......a lot of the food-service workers at my school are like that.  The worst is when I have to remind them to use the veggie tools for my food, only to have them act all put out that I don't want them cutting my pizza with a cutter that's covered in pepperoni juice.

I never meant to say that it's OK to be rude to customers, I just meant to convey that one sentence uttered in a less-than-friendly tone is not worth flipping out over, to the point where you are so peeved you'd bother to call the manager. I agree they should be ready to serve by 8 if the sign says 8 though. It might not be the employee's fault though, as another poster pointed out. Could be a scheduling flaw. I used to work in some hellish minimum wage job as a cashier, and I was scheduled till store closing (6 PM), and not paid one minute more. So at 6 PM we had one helluva job convincing the customers to quite shopping already and get their butts to the front of the store to pay, and then they'd have full carts full of stuff, and problems to boot, like, "How come you won't honour this expired 10-cent off coupon!!?? This is an outrage!".  Then we had to cash out. I was routinely kept there WELL after 6, unpaid, my feet killing me after an 8.5-hour shift, standing. I don't blame the Subway employee for not coming in any earlier, unless they are scheduled and paid for the extra time. (And yes, I'll concede, this IS something that should be addressed with management, although unless I was a regular 8 AM Subway customer, I really, really, don't think I'd find it worth bothering about).

Somewhat OT, but I think you'll all get a kick out of it.

I'm taking a Music History class, and last week's lesson was on opera.  She tried to demonstrate the different parts, and guess what her example was?

We got an impromptu aria on the joys of a 6 inch tuna sub. :D

Thanks y'all!   I went to Subway for dinner last night because I suddenly had a craving.   The guy seemed so friendly until he realized I didn't speak Spanish... then his smile went away and his attitude changed.   While he DID change gloves after making Hubby's sandwich  and before making mine.... He used the same knife to cut them with.     Fortunately I didn't get sick, but  I was in no mood to complain.  I had already waited half an hour while he filled 4 drive-thru orders before even asking me what I wanted.   I think next time I'll try Quiznos or Blimpie.

I used to love Subway, but the one here in THIS town does not have any English-Speaking employees. You have to point at the menu, and the toppings.   I will not be returning.

Pixie I would not have waited 30 min for someone to wait on me.  EVER

I have walked out of so called "fast food" places in less time.

Now I like to wear "funny clothes" from time to time and one winter I discovered that my cloak was warmer than any of my winter coats.  So I wore it most of the time. (I was wearing a factory uniform at the time and discovered winter wind and those polyester pants might as well not be there. Wool cloak = WARM)

I walked into the "golden arches" and watched two front counter workers take one look and RUN (yes, not just walk, RUN) to the back of the store.  I waited till the manager turned around as they ran past her.  I waved at the manager and "swirled" my way out of there.  (OK, too much drama, but I wanted to be sure she SAW me go right out the door from standing at the counter)

Did the same thing at a Pizza Hut as well.  That time three other tables with one person each followed me, apparently they had been waiting a while too, being ignored.
