Under Normal Circumstances

MadMadge43:
I was at the Beverly Center tonight and was headed out towards the parking area to the valet section. If you're unfamiliar the BC is 7 stories tall, the first 5 stories are parking, and they have a huge esculator system on the side of the building down to each parking floor. I was still in the mall walking towards the escalator when I noticed a commotion and people starting to run in the same direction I was headed and sales clerks looking out their window. At first I thougt somebody had stole something. Then I noticed that the people running all had professional cameras.
Must be someone famous (the paparrazzi hangs out at places like this waiting for shots and must have just figured out somebody was there too late.) So they run past me and I continue on my way. Some of the esculators are turned off, I sigh and continue downward. That's when I see the two girls rushing away from the cameras and kicking the automatic turn off for the esculators and they ducked into the parking lot.
I didn't get to see who they were but there was obviously a hot pursuit. And I forgave them for my 7 story walk down, because I did feel for them. How are you supposed to get your Christmas shopping done if you're not allowed to shop? I was also kind of hoping that I would catch up with them in valet (where I see most of my sightings) to figure out who it was that caused such a stir. But no, they were much smarter than me and parked on their own.
So what do you think? In any other case I would be livid if somebody turned off the esculator, but I kind of felt they had a pass. (If they had turned off the up elevator I might not be in such a forgiving mood)
Gigi:
Much as I hate the paparrazzi I also know that most of the young hollywood, rich kid bad boys and air head heiress types deliberately court them, even while claiming to hate it.
Some of the ones I know were bemoaning the fact that they couldn't have a nice meal at The Ivy or shop comfortably on Robertson because of the tabloid stalkers and photographers. Since it's well-known that the photogs are always staking out that area I asked them why they didn't go to a more obscure place, or at least sit inside instead of on the sidewalk. The response: If we went somewhere else noone would take our pictures. ::)
The tabloid press goes too far for sure, but much of the misery is of the "star's" own making. My sympathies lie with the customers who had to trudge down those long flights toting full shopping bags. It could also be hazardous to some people's health.

Umm......send an assistant, shop online, use a personal shopper, go early in the day, have the stores opened early or late for private shopping, shop out of town where the paparrazzi don't hang out......
Celebrities may have a few more challenges getting personal business taken care of, but they also have a wealth of options available for working around them. Week after week, the same people keep ending up in the tabloids - either they are v-e-r-y s-l-o-w learners or they are actively courting the attention.
Twik:
When I become as incredibly wealthy and famous as I deserve, the first thing that I cut out of my life is the legwork of shopping in malls. However, I must admit that some people may actually enjoy it, so it would be a major annoyance to be hounded every time one showed up at Square One.
On the other hand, I would imagine that if most celebrities showed up at, say, Wal-Mart without makeup at 9:30, the paparazzi would likely not be trailing after them - instead, people would be smiling vaguely and thinking, "you know, that person kind of looks like XXX, except not so good-looking."
BurninDinner:
I thought about this for a while and decided the above poster is correct and they MUST have known what would happen and did it for a lark. Who in their right mind wouldn't think they'd cause a stir at a MALL?! Honestly. Thus, rude.
