OK, I have read all the posts and have thought about this for a few days.
I feel that if the boss said:
" I feel we should not use Solvent X because is causes liver damage, can cause birth defects if a woman handling it is pregnant, should not be handled by those who are immune compromised and causes big purple hairy warts, and we have found that Solvent Y has no such side effects" that would be OK, because no one was specifically pointed out and all side effects were listed.
If the boss had said, "Well CB is a girl and might have a baby, Bob is a drinker and his liver is already in jeopardy, Stan uses IV drugs so he may get HIV any day now and I am too pretty for big hairy purple pimples" that is wrong.
It is the company's JOB to make people aware of the side effects of the chemicals they handle, but they should not single out any person for this unless they are the only person who will come in contact with it. There are law suits about this type of thing because it used to because so any companies did not do this and people died because of it. I myself am the child of a man who worked which such chemicals in the late sixties and early seventies, he carried them home on his clothes to my pregnant mother and older brother, and I now suffer some of the problems that that chemical causes.
