Do not eat crunchy foods during a test!
« on: December 13, 2006, 01:13:39 PM »
I was writing a final today and a girl in my class was eating an apple. When the room is completely silent sounds like that are magnified about 1000 times. All I could hear all through the test was CRUNCH! SMACK SMACK SMACK! CRUNCH! It was distracting and getting on my nerves, not to mention some of the other students (who were glaring at her). I would like to have told her to knock it off but we aren't allowed to talk during exams. What should I (or the other students) have done in this situation?

Why didn't you go up to the teacher and privately complain to him about it? He could of told her to knock it off.

You could have done as I have during one of my last finals I remember.

This was a room full with something like 300 people. We're "happily" working when one of the students starts making very loud noise, and then he turned to the neighbor behind him (a very nice little old lady) and started speaking o.O .

He even went out several times, without consulting anyone, of course. At some point, while he was out I raised my hand, asked the person who was watching us if there wasn't anything we could do.

She replied... and I'm not joking here "Well, you could always go at it together and strangle him. Or something like that." They couldn't do a darn thing themselves, cause, had they called security, the guy could have sued for assault!!!

The worst thing is, we knew the guy was an extremist Islamist or something to that extent... He was always talking of going to bomb buildings, going to Afghanistan to learn about techniques, and was veeeeeeeeeeery creepy in general.

What school do you go to where eating is permitted in the classroom?? The instructor should have immediately put the quietus on that! Clear your desk means clear your desk!
I'm taking finals right now too, and in my current state of stress I think I would have lobbed a desk at her without even thinking about it....
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

I suppose that would have been the smart thing to do.  :-[

What universe does your school exist in where students taking a final exam talk to others and even leave the room repeatedly without consequences? Or where calling security could lead, by itself, to assault charges? Do they consider asking people to leave an exam to be the same as beating someone up? Why is it not at least possible to speak to the offender and point out that his behaviour is not acceptable?

All I can imagine is that your school is run by academics who specialized in the "permissive" style of early childhood education, and can't bring themselves to say "no", either to 3-year-olds or adults who act as if they're three.

This is why I really enjoyed my music theory and music history teachers classes. During exams they would put on some quiet (instrumental) music that was not distracting but would drown out any noises that might happen. One girl always brought a container of bacon from the dining hall and would sit there and crunch it. Not as loud as an apple, but the music sure helped.

We've always been allowed to eat in class at my school, and that includes during exams.  We're technically not allowed to have food or drink in the practice rooms either (except for water, of course), but then they had to bend that rule for one boy who has diabetes (who happens to be one hell of a saxophonist, by the way), and then it just pretty much went out the window.....I remember one time in second year, Tanya and Liz and I were having a chamber ensemble rehearsal, and Kingpiano was coaching us, and he was eating a personal pizza he'd gotten from the snack bar in the student union building, and he just said, "Terrible!"; in a really disgusted tone of voice, and then I responded, "I'm sorry, Kingpiano, we'll play it again."; and he said, "No, it's the PIZZA that's terrible, how can you girls eat that stuff?"

When I was in high school you were permitted to eat during exams provided you weren't disturbing people. Most people only did it once they'd finished.

I can remember doing a nightmarishly hard physics exam once, being an hour into the paper and suddenly hearing PSSCHHT! One of the science-genius lads had finished his paper already and opened a can of Pepsi.

Does crying count as too much noise?  I remember crying during a first year math exam.  It was in a triple gym with many different classes taking exams.  I was too embarassed to call attention to myself and get up and leave.  I cried quietly and tried only to sniffle when someone made a noise, such as a chair scraping. to get really disgusting, you should have seen my sleeve when I finished. (I didnt' think to bring tissue).  I would have done things differently now. especially since I ended the course with a B+ (Nothing to cry about!!!)

My school allows people to bring food to class, so long as they clean up after themselves. I've been in classes where people were opening bottles of soda and rustling potato chip bags during the lectures. Too bad someone sitting next to or near the apple-crunching girl didn't 'accidentally' cough or sneeze all over her food - if she proceeded to keep crunching it after that, I'd probably have to try and not let my stomach turn over.

honestly if this happened to me during a final I would have thrown something at her. That would have gotten the point across :)

I did actually yell something along the lines of "For Pete's sake! Are you serious!?" at a girl who had her cell phone ring during a final exam ... and answered it!
It was a written essay, there wasn't really any way she could have been cheating, but i still don't see why the proctors didn't do anything. Technically, though, at that point they should have thrown us both out.

It's alright, man. I'm only bleeding, man. Stay hungry, stay free, and do the best you can.

That's just so wrong.  He could have stepped out of the practice room for five minutes to have a snack.  Besides, everyone needs a break from practicing once in awhile and a snack break is the perfect excuse to get off the chair and take a short walk.

(This is a sore subject for me because people abuse our practice rooms so much. :( )

Ugh I HATE that.

My personal favorites:

(I am in law school in the evening classes start at 6pm so we are allowed to eat because we're coming directly from work and often wont eat until after 11pm if we dont get something in!)

1. Oblivious guy during an oral exam was eating pasta with red sauce in a most obnoxious way, by slurping it into his mouth rather then biting, very noisey. When he was called on he stood up to speak (we must stand) he knocked the pasta over himself. He ended up covered in sauce. I can't say I didn't do a little mental happy dance.

2. During one regular class someone decided they wanted to eat a garlic pepporoni pizza she had just gotten. She opened the pizza and the entire class STANK of garlic (and I am a garlic lover). The teacher says, "Miss. XXX I am afraid you'll have to remove yourself and your stink bomb from the class, immediately." Ahh I LOVED that teacher!
