I understand why managers hate to offend customers by playing the "8 items or less police". However, if they're not going to prevent people with large orders from using it, and annoying the shoppers with one or two items, why don't they just get rid of express lanes? It seems to be a no-win situation if customers won't police themselves.

I hate that our Walmart has a policy that one may ONLY buy tobacco products in the express lane. 

The cashiers on our cigarette express lane cannot turn down a customer who is purchasing cigarettes.  It doesn't matter how many items they have.  The sign is really more for those who aren't purchasing any cigarettes at all.  The only register they can be purchased at is that register and we don't expect someone to go through the line twice.  At least at my store you wouldn't have to worry about anyone saying something.  That's what that register is for and it doesn't matter if you have a week's worth of groceries.  We'll ring it up and hopefully most of us will be pleasant.  Some don't realize that you can actually check out more than 10 if you are also purchasing cigarettes.

I read a comeback once that I thought was perfect:  The cashier smiled very politely at the woman with way too many items then said "Which 10 of these items did you wish to purchase?"

Seriously though, I've done it before and suffered the humiliation of having 25 items in the express lane...and believe me, I apologized--and at least half the people stopped looking mad, smiled, and said "well actually, I've done the same thing myself"
