The IT posts reminded me of my most recent encounter with the Geek Squad and my newish smart phone.

Hubby & I had stupid phones - no texting and the voicemail didn't always take messages.  So we bit the bullet and bought top of the line new smart phones.  I got the Note II and he got Galaxy 4.  The Note II had so many features and it is larger than the typical cell phone, so my first question to the sales person was "Can I make phone calls with this?"

Fast forward 4 months and I had a problem with my smart phone: I can't make phone calls.  I could enter a telephone number, but I could not hear it ring or hear the person speaking.  I could receive calls, text, email, browse the internet, etc.  In fact, I could do everything but make phone calls.  I thought it would clear up, but after a week of not being able to make phone calls, I decided I needed to see if they could fix it.  I called up the Geek Squad and they explained my options and set up an appointment for me to see a Geek.  The appointment was 4 days away because they said the first thing they would do would be to wipe the phone and reset it to the factory settings, so I should save/backup anything I wanted to keep.  Then they explained that, if the software reboot did not fix the problem, they could order a replacement phone which would arrive in 3-4 (more) days.  Fortunately, all of the above would be at no charge to me.  So it will cost me inconvenience, but no money, to get my phone to work.

My husband and I wrote down a few other issues we needed help with in case we had enough time with the Geek.  We sit down with the Geek and start to describe the problem.  Then I said, "I think it will be quicker to show you."  I speed dial my husband's cell phone (which we had with us) so the Geek could hear his phone ringing while my phone is silent.  But that's not what happened.  My phone worked just fine - no problems.  I could hear his phone ringing on my speaker phone, so we switched the speaker off and could still hear the ringing through my phone.  I looked up at the Geek and said, "I don't know how you fixed it, but thanks."  He asked if I wanted a new phone.  I said "No, it took me too long to set this one up and it's working fine now."

So I went without being able to make phone calls on my "smart phone" for almost 2 weeks, then it worked perfectly when the Geek stood next to it. :-[

Good thing we had other questions so we didn't waste the Geek's time.

My favorite calls at work are the ones when the tech starts magically working as soon as I pick up the phone.

I repaired machines for a company. I had one machine that would be broken until I would walk in to fix it. Then it would work fine. After several visits, I gave up and put a picture of me on the machine so it would think I was watching. It worked perfectly after that.

Until the new boss decided that was stupid and took my picture down and threw the picture away. The machine broke down, and it was never able to be fixed. A year or later, the machine was removed, having never be fixed.

I mentioned a similar story to an engineer of my acquaintance (story involved an early home computer - and it was in The Readers' Digest two decades or more ago.....

Same thing - it wouldn't work until the tech took the cover off & looked in - so he taped his photo on the spot on the case where he usually stood...

It worked until it was no longer worth using - it never came back to the shop....

The engineer ruined the "magic" by speculating a possible short circuit and the photo or the tape were in the right place to insulate the spot.

It made sense...but it wasn't as funny...

I used to support 50+ users spread out over a campus.  If I couldn't fix their issue over the phone, I  made a field trip.  If I couldn't fix it at their desk, I took it back to my office and fixed it there.  More than once, a computer that refused to work in its home office would perform brilliantly on my workbench.  I used to joke that they just got bored and wanted a vacation.

I made the same joke about my sewing machine and my embroidery machine - both have been to the "spa" in the last two years, just not at the same time.

I hope that the serger doesn't decide that it needs a trip to the spa.....

DH trained as an electrician in his late teens. I joke that he must have got some kind of zap that gave him a superpower that makes things work when he touches them. Seriously, the number is times people have tried and tried to get stuff working to no avail - TV, calculator, computer, kitchen scale - then he comes and does the exact same thing and it works is amazing.

I suggested a high-vis cape for his superhero costume, but he said it would have to be a vest - a cape wouldn't pass safety standards.

My husband is a former network administrator and IT guy.

While he was at work, everything that he fixed worked perfectly, after experiencing his magic touch.  But when anything breaks at home, well...not so much.

I guess he had to get paid for the fix to make it work.

Our second graders nicknamed our CITS (Campus Instructional Technology Specialist) the magic lady. She walks in the room and the tech starts working.

Not tech, but sort of related:

My father keeps threatening to solve the drought problems in other parts of the country by driving around with his lawn mower and thinking about mowing other people's lawns.  Every time he goes to mow, it pours.  A couple days ago he got about 5 minutes of mowing in before the rain started.  We got 8 inches of rain that day.

For several years, I could do that by washing our cars (had to do both) by hand.  A trip to a car wash didn't do the trick.

Sadly, my power no longer works.  I wonder where it went...

When I did tech support, the conversations always went like this:

Me: So what were you doing right before it happened?
User:  Nothing!
Me:  *sigh* So after you did nothing, what did you do?
DH does the much more irritating "What did you do to it?" as if I was using the monitor as a basketball backboard or pounding on the keyboard with my fists.

I'm afraid I get a little snappish at that, because my usual answer is "I doubleclicked on the icon to open (program.)"

Obviously it transferred to my father and his lawn mower.  ;)

I was just at the grocery store. It has one of those cards you get for free and will give you a sale price if there is one. A woman ahead of me had just gotten her receipt and was double-checking it. She said "no; this isn't right. The 'thanks for shopping with us name' isn't mine. You typed in my telephone number [they can look up your card number with a phone number] wrong and now I 'm not getting the sale prices."

The cashier apologized but said that returning it and reringing the purchases won't make discounts suddenly appear. She disagreed.

He called the manager at her request.

I am sad I had to leave before the resolution. Honestly anyone with a card gets the same sale prices as any other random person with a card.

Actually, if it was a store where she could and did have electronic coupons attached to her account, she could indeed be missing discounts. Although I would hope the cashier would be aware of that possibility.

The store doesn't have those so no. The only thing she could have done is added to her total of gallons of milk bought (if you buy X number you get 1 free) but her bag was too small and light to hold even a half-gallon.

A perfect storm of Special Snowflake and Not Harry Potter - ness appeared when I worked on Friday:

So, one of our auditoriums was on the fritz, and a movie could not be shown. This news was very disappointing to most people, but they understood that sometimes things like that happen, and there's nothing we can do until a technician gets here to fix it.

But, not this woman. She proceeded to scream to everyone that "OH MY DIETY, THIS MOVIE ISN'T PLAYING!" How dare we have technical difficulties when she was on such a tight schedule? The GM offered her the same deal as everyone else - free tickets to literally any other non - 3D movie we had playing. But no! Her movie was not playing! This totally messed up her whole schedule!

Lady, we can't do anything about it. We really don't want this to happen; we promise. Losing money is not something we want to do, because we're a business - we're here to make money. But really, none of us were clairvoyant enough to know that the busiest woman in the entire world wanted to see a movie that's been out for at least 2 weeks right this very minute! *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*

No capes!
