Elevator etiquette

If I get in the elevator after someone else has gone in, sometimes they will ask me what floor I'm going to so they can hit the appropriate button for me. Most often I will just give them a small smile and hit the button myself. I only do this because I do not like people doing things for me, even if they offer. Is it rude of me to do what I have been doing?

I don't think it's rude, as long as you acknowledge the offer.  Maybe a "Thanks, I got it" instead of just the smile, but that's up to you.

It's only rude if they are standing in front of the buttons. If they are then you might be invanding their "personal space" by reaching over them to hit the button yourself. Sometimes it's just easier to let them hit the button because they feel like they helped someone.

I don't think it's rude if you are gracious when refusing it, as in, "Thanks, I've got it," and if you don't have to invade someone's personal space to press the button.

It would only be rude if the elevator was full of people and you insisted in making a bunch pf people move out of the way just so you could push the button yourself. But assuming you aren't reaching over people or making them push back against others to get out of your way, a smile and a, "Thanks, I got it," is fine. I do think you should say thank you and acknowledge that the person offered to do something rather than just smiling at them though.
