Bad holiday etiquette, offensive or freedeom of speech?

I just saw this story on Yahoo news:

From the brief article it sounds like this guy does a holiday themed window every year and every year the theme is very "off color" - snowman bashing carolers, kid using newly received present of chemistry set to cook crystal meth... Well this year it was gingerbread men as nazis.

I was totally offended at first and then re-read the story and am now not sure. I think it is in bad taste, but he doesn't sound like an anti-semite. Just someone with a very odd sense of humor. He's not saying nazis are good, just that gingerbread men are so innocent and it's "interesting" to see them dressed as such. I think that is what he's saying...

All the same, if I walked by this display I think I'd be upset. Thoughts?

It doesn't even sound particularly arty.  It's just kind of ... crass.

Agree with buffy. It sounds like something you'd find perusing an art gallery. He just has an oddball, tasteless, black sense of humor.

Coincidentally, last year a man in some state I don't remember put up a yard display of Christmas characters having gruesome things done to them. It was done in the theme of how greedy Christmas is becoming and how the real message is being destroyed. A bunch of parents complained that it was going to scare children walking by. Sure it might, but since it's his yard, they don't have much power to stop him unless there is a HOA.

Would it scare the kids as much as the cavorting snowmen???

I think it depends on the sense of humor you have.

One of my online friends from back east complained that someone built a snow penis on her college campus. I started laughing because I find that kind of thing funny. Somebody on the kaijuphile board I visit thought the nazi snowmen were hilarious, and he happens to be an anarchist with a dark sense of humor.
