Auntie Venom - I still have problems wrapping my brain around children and adult library cards. I guess NY state overall was more open minded than I realized since I'd only ever seen things like generic library cards. And I definitely agree with you about how many kids are either illiterate or semi-iliterate. Which is probably the only reason why I approve of Harry Potter being so popular, it encouraged a great number of children (and adults!) to actually get into reading for enjoyment. Not that I'm saying everyone should have their nose buried in a book, but it would be nice to see more people in general encouraging reading for enjoyment.

My only story (and it's weird), entails being at the beach when I was 24 or 25. I was wearing shorts and a t shirt... Pretty soon, I became bored and started digging a hole in the sand, minding my own business.

A  guy in a garage mechanic's type uniform (beach attire?) came over and started chatting with me.  I was trying to get rid of him, politely.  Somehow I mentioned my job at a college.  He said "how old are you?"  I told him and he said "I thought you were 14!"

Um..do I want to know why he was chatting up 14 year olds at the beach?

Wow, just, wow. First time I've ever heard of someone getting carded. Almost as bad as in the bad old days when I worked in a supermarket and carded some poor lady for a case of beer and she was 30, but looked 10 years younger. My manager was mortified, but I made the woman's day.

Here's my funny ID story:

My brother is 18 months younger than I am.  This summer my brother and his friends took a Saturday afternoon and helped me move all of my stuff into my new apartment.  They wouldn't take any money for it, so I stopped and picked up half a dozen pizzas and then went to the liquor store to pick up a case of Budweiser to thank them.  I was 22 at the time and had been out of high school four years.  The guy working the counter had been in my class in high school.  We chatted for a minute and he rang up my beer...then he asked me for ID!!!  He never was the brightest one.

My younger brother stops in on his 21st birthday a couple of months later and buys a case of beer without question.  Same guy is working at the counter.

I almost always get carded and my brother never does.  Must be the facial hair...

Humiliation is having a drink with your aunt at the airport bar, while both waiting to fly out to another relative's wedding... and having her get carded and not you!  And she's 11 years OLDER!!

I was carded a few days ago because I bought a couple of Sharpie permanent markers (I'm 25 but look about, oh, 14 at the most). I thought that they were non toxic but apparently somebody's figured out some dangerous thing to do with them. Or maybe the store's policy is broad to be on the safe side.

They fall under the same category as aerosol cans because some idiot kids started sniffing them in the hopes of getting high. No clue if that's possible or not.

I get a headache and feel sick to my stomach with spray paint and spray glitter. The floral department at work uses it and when I am on express I get sick from smelling the fumes.

Sure can--  I used to have to limit my time working with them when I was doing shrink-art Christmas ornaments for dollhouse stuff.  Nothing like getting "high" right under your parents noses

I found out how young I really look when I registered on an adults-only forum a while back. I went and stuck my photo up in the "Show us You!" topic, and I had other members telling me they were going to get me banned from the site because they thought I lied about my age. I turned 19 this past summer, but these people on this forum said I looked no older than 13. I had to disagree because I know what a 13-year-old looks like and I know what I look like, and there is a significant difference - I do NOT look the same as I did seven years ago! Quite a few people gave me a hard time, saying that I was not old enough to be on the site, blah blah blah. But I'm still a member and I visit occasionally. I sure hope I still look younger than I really am in about thirty years' time.

I bought toilet cleaner the other day.  I was using the self help checkout.  The cashier who watches four of those had to come over and "authorize" the purchase (I am clearly not a teenager and had other cleaning supplies in the purchase).

I am waiting for flour, eggs, sugar, and shortening to go on the "watch list" because of the cookies, cakes, and candy that can be made with them.  All subject to abuse........

If they ever add chocolate chips to the list - I am going to have to emigrate to Mars or something.

At age 29 I was carded in the presence of my father.  We were staying at a hotel and had gone to the lounge for drinks.

I had my driver's license on me and chose to laugh it off.

At 26, I get carded all the time.  I even get asked if I want a children's (under 12) menu on occasion!  That happened a few weeks ago, when I went out to dinner with a (younger) friend! 

DBF, at 29, gets carded occasionally too, especially if he's clean-shaven.

I wouldn't have showed her. She had no legal ground to ask for ID and that is just weird.

I am 29, but look much younger. I still get carded for alcohol and once in the airport. lol The security guard said he needed to make sure dh wasn't taking a minor out of state. I was 26 at the time.
