Christmas Gift for a "boss"
« on: December 17, 2006, 10:59:12 AM »
I volunteer at the dojang where I train - I do office work, create newsletters, figure out advertising and the like.  Last year, I gave my SaBumNim a pottery piece for his home and a big thing of coffee (he's a caffeine addict like me).  This year, I'm not sure what to give him.  He's got enough coffee from all of his students to last him another year!

He did give me a gift yesterday after class - a gift card to the mall where the dojang is.  I don't want it to look like I'm just reciprocating, since I was planning on giving him something the last class before Christmas.  What would be appropriate, cost wise, really?

How about something like a Border's (or bookstore) gift card. Maybe a new coffee mug? $15 dollars I think is good, depending on how strong you feel about buying him a present and the relationship you have. Good luck, let me know what you do!!

Is there anything that the dojang needs, or could benefit from, such as artwork?

I'm getting my boss a fruit basket from a local fruit market. It's something that he'll use and it's not that expensive but it shows you thought about him.

Does your boss find it interesting to read books that are about other martial arts other than Tae Kwon Do? I know that my former master found it interesting to read about other styles for ideas or just comparison to work with people who had background in something other than Tae Kwon Do.

I am a big fan of the consumable gift!
I work in a big corporation for a 40 something male who likes to drink. So he's getting a nice bottle of wine or liquor. Under $40. He'll use it and it won't get dusty on some shelf.
However I realize that isn't appropriate for everyone's boss.

I really like the fruit basket idea that someone posted about. I also have also baked on occassion. It is nice to give someone something that you've made yourself.

But since he has all that coffee - could you get him a personalized mug and a small gift card to a bagel place or something similar? Stick with the coffee theme but be more creative than the rest?

heck, my suggestion would be something that goes with coffee - gift certificates for doughnuts, or a boxed mix for scones (the kind where you just have to add water and bake) or something like that!

I'm guessing that, much like elementary school teachers, he probably has all the coffee, coffee mugs, and martial arts-related goo-gahs in a student's price range already.

I'm giving everyone I work with the same thing - a nice Xmas tree decoration.  If they don't decorate a tree at home, they can hang it in their office or something.   Doesn't cost much, but is a nice token.  I love tree decorations and would be very happy if people gave me unique ones for my tree.
