In this instance, it was unfair of them to expect you to accomodate their wishes.  You were in an area that THEY encroached upon, willingly.  They could just as willingly have gotten up and left, when they found it too smoky for their tastes.

As for bringing their children with them....the mind boggles!

3. There was a non-smoking option they didn't chose to take.

As someone who is allergic to smoke (we're talking swollen eyes and tears), I would have been annoyed only if you were in an area where you weren't supposed to be smoking.  THEY were in the wrong place and had no right to ask you to put out your cigarette.

In one of our favorite restaurants, we always sit in the smoking section because it's a lot less chaotic and we usually don't have to wait for a table.  We don't smoke, but because we're sitting in the smoking section we fully expect people around us to smoke.  We can stand it for the time we're there, because the trade-off of some peace and quiet is worth it.

In Tucson they allow smoking only outside on patios of restaurants. One day my friend and I were enjoying a nice breakfast and chatting up a storm and having a cigarrette. Mom and daughter walk up to go in the restaurant. Daugher decides she wants to sit outside and they sit down right next to us. That's when mom notices us smoking and tells daughter very loudly they have to go inside because of the smoke. It was a huge patio and they could have moved 10 tables away from us. Well daugher throws a fit because she wants to feed the pigeons. (Don't even get me started about feeding those things at a restaurant).

She proceeds to scream so loudly mother makes her leave all the while telling her it's our fault that she can't feed the pretty birds. This scene with the screaming kid took about 20 minutes. They finally came back in and little girl looks at us and says naughty you and gives us the death glare.  My friend looked at her and said, I think I need another cigarrette and promptly lit up. She did refrain herself from blowing it toward the child, but I could tell she wanted to.

I quit smoking fifteen years ago but I do agree with you.  There are very few places left for smokers. They have an option to find a non smoking restaurant or wait for a table in the non smoking area.

Sounds like the parent's desire to watch the football game was more important than keeping their kids out of the smoke. How rude of them to make that your problem. Your SO handled the situation really well by calmly responding to the man, and repeating as necessary.

it was a BAR

*shakes head sadly* As an ex smoker I'm sensitive to the smell of smoke - but complaining about it in a bar? Are children even allowed in bars? Good gracious!

What annoys me is when our staff goes out for lunches or whatever, they *always* book a table in the smoking section, or they say, "Let's go sit in the bar." And even the non-smokers on the staff act like I'm nuts when I don't want to! Is it now some kind of faux pas not to want to sit blowing my nose for the next five hours after my sinuses go ballistic? Honestly.

But if I do cave and go sit with them, I'm not going to complain. I mean I knew what it would be like before I went in!

I'm just thinking of Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama where she says, "You've got a baby...in a bar."   :)

Then I'll go into an adult bookstore and complain about all the dirty books.

Just please don't bring your children.

(Yes, I've actually seen this happen once.  I'm still kicking myself for not calling the cops, especially since the staff didn't do anything about it.  We complained to the staff, turned around and left, and have never been back.)

They brought their CHILDREN???!!!  Into a WHAT WHAT??!!!

I'll bet these are the same people who brought their two young children to "The Ring" and then drug them out sobbing hysterically half way through the movie.  The kicker, these so called "parents" were angry at the kids because they had to leave.  My friend and I were livid!  And were both childfree!  It disturbs me that we, who don't want children, were more concerned about the welfare of those kids then their actual "parents" were.
"POCKETS!"  From the new Dr. Who, "Runaway Bride" extra geek points if you laugh.

Yikes!  I've never, ever walked into an adult store without being carded - the ones I go to card every person that enters.  I *might* bring an older (16+) daughter someday in the interest of education, but I can't imagine who'd bring in a child!

1. We were there first! They could have picked a different seat because they noticed us smoking before they sat. They could have moved if they realized it bothered them.

I have to add to this that even if you hadn't been smoking when they sat down they have no right to ask you not to as they are in a BAR that allows smoking with their children.  I assume that you weren't in the middle of no where and that there was no other place anywhere around that they could have eaten at.  (even if that was so, it was a smoking restaurant so they would have been out of luck.)

Yeah, I was pretty astonished too.  Admittedly it was one of the more couples-friendly/woman-friendly boutiques, rather than the icky-floor trenchcoat-wearing-crowd places; but still...  they had all the usual, um, appliances displayed on the wall, and the pictures on the front of the DVDs are extremely graphic.  (The DVD rack was what the woman was looking at while holding her probably 3yo daughter...  the child was certainly old enough to see and retain the images, which I frankly consider sexual abuse.  Like I said, I really should have called the cops.  I'm still sorry I didn't.)

Anyway.  Sorry to thread-hijack.
