Jan Karan's Shepherds Abiding.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

I'm reading Suite Francaise, which I think is excellent but depressing--like everything I read. I'm taking advantage of vacation to try to satisfy my love of depressing historical fiction, preferably about wars. I'm a  historian and a grad student so you'd think I wouldn't want to read about the Second World War in my free time but...

Of course, if anyone has suggestions for historical fiction, I'm always running out of titles to look for.

Have you tried Sebastian Faulks? I'm thinking Charlotte Gray and The Girl at the Lion d'Or. Birdsong is supposed to be very good as well. I don't know if they'll fulfill your depressing criteria - but they aren't exactly cheerful either. I found them to be very....quiet books I'd say.

Or you could try Pat Barker's Regeneration triology. I'm listening to Regeneration just now. Okay, come to think of it, this is WW1 actually, but Seigfried Sasson and a bunch of shell-shocked soldiers in a mental health facility should toss up a lot of angst.  ;)

For how WW2 affected upper class English family you can try the Cazalet Family Chronicles. I really liked them, although some parts were a little bit dull. Still, I thought they evoked an interesting period of time and I got to like the characters.

The Kent Family Chronicles and North and South Trilogy by John Jakes. Very good research and just enough steamy....and plenty of war and intrigue.
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

I'm just getting ready to start reading James Pattersons "CROSS". I love his Alex Cross series and  his recent series about the Women solving murders. I'm afraid I read primarily for entertainment

I'm about to start "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards for one of my book clubs and as soon as I finish that I have to read "Little Children" by Tom Perrotta for the other.

I loved Rebecca.  Never could get into Vanity Fair though.  I didn't like any of the characters, and that's a must for me.

Got 5 new books for Christmas, so I'm currently wading through them:

All 4 "Tales of the Slayers" novels (I have the comic put out last year as well).  Just finished the first one and its GREAT!
Lisey's Story by Stephen King (I'm saving that one for last, SK junkie here and I want to savor it....)

Today I just started a book I got for Christmas called "The Lamb's Supper" by Scott Hahn. I'm astonished. It's a theological study of how the Mass is the embodiment of the Book of Revelation.

I'm interrupting "The Dance of Anger" by Harriet Lerner to read this book. I read the dust jacket on Christmas morning and didn't want to wait to finish the other before diving into it.  8)

doesn't everybody have three or four books going at the same time?

There is the I'm eating out alone book
the bathroom book
the bed room book

and my favorite type of book - the one that is sooooo good that you walk around with it in front of your nose till it is finished.

Thanks Chonsil and Auntie Venom for the suggestions, I will add those to my list of books to look for. I have read Charlotte Grey and liked it but not the others by Faulks so they seem a good bet.

In a couple days, I'll be reading "Family" (#4 in the Firstborn series by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley).

I just returned several library books by Debbie Macomber.
