Sadly, as big a bibliophage (I don't just read books, I DEVOUR them!) as I am, I haven't started any new books lately. Partly because it's uncomfortable for me to sit up and read right now, partly because I just don't have anything I'm absolutely burning to read. I do have the Harry Potter audiobooks on my iPod (yes, they are downloadable from iTunes!), so I'm almost done listening to "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," as I'm trying to listen to them all in order.

I just finished reading William Makepeace Thackeray's classic "Vanity Fair," which is one of my favorite works of Victorian literature, and I've got a choice as to what to read next. I've got Alex Haley's "Roots," which looks like a good (but dense!) read, which my grandpa gave me a few weeks ago. My cousin in Florida sent me the original Spanish version of another nonfiction work, "Against All Hope," by Armando Valladares - it's his memoir of 22 years spent in Cuba's political prisons and the abuses he endured there - for not wanting to put up a pro-Castro sticker at work or something similar - 22 years spent in prison for a very small offense. It's a chilling book, and not something I'm sure I want to read during the holidays, but it's a worthwhile read.

I also have another book a friend gave me called "Brimstone," which is supposed to be a mystery book involving the Devil in some way, which looks like a fun read, but I don't like to read creepy stuff while I'm alone in the house (as I am right now, so that's out). And, lurking somewhere inside the armoire where I keep my media (books, CDs, movies) rather than clothing, I have a newer copy of Stephen King's "IT," my favorite King book, but again, something I do NOT like to read when I'm alone in the house. Maybe I'll just be a wimp and read "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" trilogy again. They aren't long books, but together they make a great coming-of-age story and I think the fourth one is due out early next year.

Or, if anyone has any suggestions, I'll take those too. Christmas is coming, which means I'm getting at least one Barnes & Noble gift card for the occasion - so I need to have something (good) to spend it on!! :)

Have you ever heard of Arturo Perez-Reverte? He's from Spain and writes these awesome drama/thrillers. They're intellectual enough to keep you thinking, but fictional enough to be a lighter read. I found his books at Borders in both English and Spanish. I highly recommend starting with "Queen of the South". I might read another of his books in Spanish because my former fluency has atrophied greatly.

As for the topic, I'm reading "I Do but I Don't" by Kamy Wicoff. It's an interesting examination of the wedding industry versus women's expectations of themselves and society. It focuses on the daughters of the feminist movement, women who grew up taking certain things for granted. Most of the book is based on her own experience and wedding. She did have the very-expensive BWW, so it's a little hard to take her writing at 100% when she's discussing the downsides to some of the traditions (and the insanity) that some brides partake in. My BF's mom gave it to me, ironically. Was she telling me something? I don't know, but I do feel better knowing that I'm not the only woman who is completely independent, but still freaks out occasionally with the "Whyyyyy aren't we engaaaaaggggeed?!?!" tantrum. Not that it's ok, it's just that I felt like a freak and a loser for the longest time and it's good to know that my insecurities are both understandable and ridiculous.

Nicoletta, I'm hoping that he writes this one from Sarah's viewpoint. I kind of think he will, he kept bringing her up in the Angel of Darkness the way Stevie was brought up a lot in The Alienist.
It's driving me mad....

Currently I'm tackling the _Song of Ice and Fire_ series by George Martin. Long, very complex with lots of storylines to track. I love it ;).

Hi Auntie Venom! I've been dying for a new Alienist book. Right now it could be written from Frederick's point of view for all I care.  ;)

I found a "new" Saint Germaine novel yesterday. (Half Price Books, got to love em)

"States of Grace"

They had two others but I already own those. My luck find 3 novels and own 2, that series is a little hard to find.

Now before you stake me I did read Anne Rice "Interview with a Vampire" and did not see what all the fuss was about. "I" didn't like it. But yet there it is getting book after book. I much prefer Saberhagan's and Yarbo's "vampire style"

If you like the Stoker "Dracula" you have to find a copy of "The Dracula Tapes" by Fred Saberhagan.  It is Dracula's side of the story and is best read right after you read Stoker's novel.  Read that way it is almost a comedy. But not a parady.

I also found a "Cat who...." quiz book for a $1.00 should be good for a giggle or two

I'm probably going to read the new Roman one next week.  It really annoys me that hardcovers are such a pain to try to read on public transportation.

We should think about starting a book exchange - maybe via the local boards? I have all of these books (mostly paperback, some hardcover) that would be loaning out to people in my area (only cause I'm far too lazy to mail anything).  There are some that I'd even give away - read them once, liked them but didn't love them.

Have either of you read the book Carr wrote for Sherlock Holmes? They had him write a sequel to S.H. - SH was killed off by Conan Doyle but Carr's sequel is pretty good.

I just finished "Eleven on Top", one of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. I'm also about to finish "The History of Murder" (sort of about the evolution of murder in society). After that I'll be fresh out so it'll be another trip to amazon.com!

Try barnesandnoble.com, they have a used and out of print section where you can get books for a song. I got a stack of hard back Gore Vidals, the whole Americana series, for 25 dollars shipped when it was all said and done, a little over, but not much.

I do that when I go to the Dollar Tree, I go in for one thing and I come out with a thirty dollar sackload. I do not even trust myself around dollar books. God help me, I nearly go broke at Altrusa sale for a quarter a pop in most cases!
