Overheard this today...

"Dehlani" - pronounced Duh-Lawn-Ee

Parents couldn't decide between Delilah and Leilani.

The mother came in to drop something off for her employer. The woman we have sitting at the front desk asked her right out what her daughter's name was after she heard the mother say it.

Not the worst on this page but definitely unique.

I knew a female Deniz; her family was Turkish.

Deniz is Turkish for "sea." It's a fairly common name. On a recent Turkish Airlines flight, the steward is my section had the first name "Mutlu." It means "happy."

Saw this one last week, but had to wait until I could see it again because I could not hold it in my brain.

One of the Art Faculty at my University is Chalet. (My brain was trying to call her both Chattel and Chateau)

I thinl Tag will be an anglisation of a traditional Irish name Tadgh.
But in Irish it's pronounced "Tyg" (like the first half of Tiger).

And it's not water related in Irish either, it means poet or philosopher.  ???

I met a young lady named Beaunka yesterday, pronounced Bianca. She told me that people try to pronounce it lots of different ways, including one person thinking her name was Bawnka.

Until I read the pronunciation, I was reading it "Bone-ka", as in Beau [Bo]. :-[

Ozyas.

Apparently, there's an Ozias in the bible, but the couple wanted their Ozyas to be different from all the other Ozias's out there.  ;)

Perhaps they were aiming for a diminutive of Ozymandias, and Ozy was too short? ;) >:D

I can see getting Chalet and Chateau mixed up, as they are both French words for types of houses. And there the similarity ends.

I first read that as “Oryzas.”  Oryza is the scientific name of rice plants. “Rices” didn’t quite seem like the best of names. (If you are an agronomist, there are times when “Oryzas” or “rices”  would be a valid word, just as “fishes” may be used.)

If "Ozias" is a Hebrew name, it may be spelled differently in other languages. I did a search for "Ozyas" and it appears to show up in some Hispanic names.

Rhaven from a resume today.

It's anybody's guess on whether the h would be pronounced and in what way.

Reminds me of Rhllor.

I think it would depend on whether it's Rh + or -.
