I have met someone who named his now adult son Blaise, spelled after the saint, pronounced Blaze.  The father has grow up among boring vanilla names (he told me), as was his own.  Many times when young Blaise introduced himself, people didn't believe it was his real name.  It suits him, though.

Maybe the thought of a 3rd century bishop/martyr can soften the initial "American Gladiator" image.

From what I have seen, he's a rather awkward, slightly geeky teenager. I'm not sure that "3rd century martyr" fits him any more than "20th century American Gladiator". But it seems like a more thoughtful choice of meaning for a name. :)

Maybe it was for Blaise Pascal, the great mathematician.

I just realised yesterday how much I truly hate it when somebody shares my name.  It's a very well-known name but not insanely common - think Melanie, along those lines.  As a child I met *one* person ever who had the same name.  Unfortunately in the country I live in now it's fairly common in my age group.   And it irritates me.  I don't like it when my coworker's sisters or girlfriends have my name.  I don't like it at social events when somebody has my name.

So I'm starting to change my thoughts about unusual names for when I have my own kids.  These days it seems even common names need to be spelled out half the time, so maybe I'll go a bit more unusual!  Not you-neek though, I hate kre8iv spelling. But a little more unusual perhaps. I shall avoid the Top 100 at all costs!

I like the fact that I have an uncommon name for my age group, but it took a long time for it not to feel like an old lady name to me. I think it helps that old-fashioned names are coming back in. I still don't exactly like my name but I don't despise it like I did as a teen and twenty-some.

Maxwell Drew Johnson, daughter of Jessica Simpson, came into the world today.

Wouldn't be a bad name if she were a boy.  :P

Ugh.  Maxwell for a girl is just plain dumb.

I agree, Shoo.  I heard they are going to call her Maxie, which isn't so bad, except that it makes me think of maxi-pads.

I thought the same thing when I heard Jessica Simpson's baby's name. <sigh> I tend to think that when you give one traditionally male name to a female child, you should make sure the other one isn't ambiguous. Otherwise, everyone is (very legitimately) going to think when they see Maxwell Drew on paper that she's a boy. Maxwell Dorothy would at least warn you to expect either gender.

If they wanted "Maxie" as a nickname so badly, why didn't they name her Maxine, I wonder.

It's apparently a family name. But still, even Drew Maxwell would've been a little better. I've heard Drew/Dru as a female name.

During the course of my work today, I cam across the name Dejeuner.  Sounds pretty, right?  Unless you speak French.
Noun 1. dejeuner - a midday meal
lunch, luncheon, tiffin
meal, repast - the food served and eaten at one time
business lunch - lunch (usually at a restaurant) where business is discussed and the cost is charged as a business expense

I heard that on the radio on my ride home from work.  The DJ asked the news announcer if Jessica had fraternal twins, because that sure didn't sound like a girl's name.  The news reader explained that they plan to call her Maxi and fortunately the DJ didn't respond.  All I can think of are maxi pads.  Who does that to a child?  (And pod that Maxine is a lovely woman's name.)

It's the maiden names of the two grandmother's combined - Maxwell on his side and Drew on her side.   Which is nice.  Except that it's not even remotely a girls name.

I wonder if it's a case of picking a name and deciding to use it regardless of the gender.   They knew they were having a girl months ago and picked out the name, but I wonder if they'd decided on it even earlier than that.  It just makes my brain hurt.   :-\
