A girl I went to college with, previously slightly pretentious and annoying but since moved to a hipster neighborhood in NY (near, but not in, Brooklyn) has finally had her baby. The name? Breukelen. She said she wanted to name it after 'the place he was born'. Except he wasn't born in Breukelen, or Brooklyn - he was born in Queens!

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breukelen_(Utrecht) The Dutch wiki page on Breukelen. It's a nice enough place, but it's a very bad name. And it's she isn't Dutch there is no way she's pronouncing that correctly.

I recently read a news item on the internet about a woman in the UK who had a young daughter named Papaya.

Weird Crime Wednesday listed one attempted murderer with the first and second names of "Bamboo Flute".

He stabbed his dad.

A local company gives our kids supplies and a backpack. We put the kids names in the little pocket/luggage tag thing that faces the kids' backs. They are free to bring their own backpacks - but at least 1/2 my kids used the backpack they were given.

We have some very strangely spelled names with our students. The ones I feel sorry for are the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders that legally are still Baby Boy/Girl Last Name. Some of them don't have any idea that is their legal name till they either start paying attention to the name on their report card (computer generated so we can't put the name they use) or are given their STAAR test. (there is big deal about making sure kids get the right form). If someone doesn't take care of it, they are going to have trouble as the get older.

I don't blame him.

Anyone who would saddle his kid with a name like that needed killin'.

Seen on cupcake wars: A woman named Anomaly.

Note: a friend's dog is named Anomaly... cute for a dog... for a human? not so much.

I cared for a patient whose full name is James Tiberius Kirk Smith*, and yes his mother was a Star Trek fan and so is he.

*Smith is not his REAL last name, I put it there to show he had four names!

Just a little anecdote to show how common wacky names are:

A friend of mine from high school, who still lives in my hometown, recently had a baby. I was talking to my mom a few days ago, and mentioned that Sarah had had her baby, a little boy. Mom asked what they'd named him and I told her James (not the real name, but think a common, classic name). Mom seemed surprised and I asked her what was so surprising about the name. She said that she's gotten so used to everyone she knows naming their kid something yewneek that she was momentarily taken aback by something as normal as James.

To be fair, my small hometown is largely hippies with a good dollop of ultraconservative survivalist types, with the result that lots of the kids in town are called something like Bliss, Namaste or Rainbow, while another good chunk are called Maverick, some variation of "Tiffany" with an extra 8 vowels, or something involving gun parts or brands, such as Beretta.

It's an interesting town.

Well, that one's certainly out of the ordinary.

Doing genealogy or working in Healthcare with seniors will certainly teach you that "unique" names are hardly a modern invention- I've come across some really strange things that some of the older set were saddled with :)
