Today I met a woman in her early 20s named Kya. I thought that was pretty. She said when she was growing up it was very unusual, but now it was becoming more popular, though with lots of different spellings.

Unusual way to spell Kyle: Cuyle.

I would never, never pronounce "Cuyle" like "Kyle" (unless told to do so)!

Ditto.  I'd assume they were going for "Cool" with a unique spelling.

I saw a Taffesse on a name board  a while ago.  Different (IME) yet not "you're kidding" worthy, and I find it unique, nice sounding, and easy to pronounce.  It can be done!

I wouldn't, either.  However, the surname Schuyler is pronounced like Skyler.  Maybe that's where they got the spelling.

When I went to high school there was a run on "Siobhan" as a name, but spelled in various ways, some close to the original, others phonetic...it's one of those where I would *never* assume the spelling. I think with some names it's kind of expected to have different spellings; Catherine, Katherine and Kathryn for instance.

Or, one little name change is generally not really difficult cause it's easily explained, "Mollie with an "ie" not a "y"", say. But I think it gets more difficult when the name is usually *only* spelled one name, and it's now got two or more changes to it, especially if they aren't phonetically intuitive. Like if someone says "Caitlin with an h" I'm going to have a hard time figuring out where they want that letter!

I went to school with a Siobhan.  Spelled "ChaVonne".

Isn't that just complicating things in an entirely new way? It looks less like it should be pronounced "Shevawn", and rather "Chavogun"

I was browsing Pinterest and saw a cute idea for a dress up corner. The comment on the pin was "need for Dafne's roon"

In the United States today, there is a pervasive tendency to treat children as adults, and adults as children.  The options of children are thus steadily expanded, while those of adults are progressively constricted.  The result is unruly children and childish adults.  ~Thomas Szasz

seeing all the alternative spellings for Siobhan cracks me up - as I went to a Catholic school in a town with a BIG Irish Catholic population. We had three Siobhan's in my year level, and one of them got called 'Shovel' because her youngest sisters could never say her name correctly.
Another got Bonnie, and the third was always always Siobhan, and never ever anything else.
... it might frighten them.

See,  I think Daffney is a completely bizarre spelling.   To me the only proper way to spell it is Daphne.

LOL, you're so right--I had a brain fart there.  Daphne is the more normal spelling.  Don't know what I was thinking...

Hannelore and Erling.  Both male, if I remember correctly.  Very striking names!

Jazmyn-Marae. Kind of pretty, but also kind of mindboggling.
