My office has thin walls....
« on: December 19, 2006, 12:38:56 PM »
Overheard (not eavesdropping, I swear! ;) )

Our receptionist was on the phone with her daughter, discussing Christmas plans.  Daughter has a 2 year old and newborn that have both been sick, and is quite frazzled.

This is the side of the conversation I could hear (it helps if you picture a sweet little southern lady who just drips charm):

"Well, honey, I have some wrapping to do tonight, but I can stop by tomorrow night to help you with the kids....yes I finished my shopping over the weekend....have you gotten something for me yet?....Is it a small thing?....Well, because I've really been wanting a salad spinner like the one you have, and I guess they're really popular because I haven't been able to find one....well, I was at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and I saw some, and I bought one for someone to give to me....I could drop it by tomorrow when I come....No, I'm really excited to get it, I promise!"

Tee hee.

Easy to get what you want for Christmas when you do your own shopping!

I'm just envisioning the cellphone commercials:

Woman walks into a department store jewelry section, smiles at the clerk, browses through all the diamond jewelry.  She then pulls out her Name Brand (TM!) phone and snaps a picture of a necklace/earring set.

Flash to the husband at home, opening his phone and smiling broadly as he sees the picture of the diamond jewelry.  Next scene, the loving couple are sitting under a Christmas Tree, she's opening the box with the necklace and earrings, and telling him he's the smartest guy ever.  Then the voiceover tells you this touching moment is brought to you by Name Brand (TM!) cellphones - get her one for Christmas today!

Sheesh.

That's how Christmas Shopping totally happens in my family.  It's hilarious.   This year, we're forcing surprises.  My mom wanted a specific blanket, and we were like "NO, we got you a blanket last year!"  Well, except for me.  I'm getting a service of 12 plates that have these awesome turkeys on them from my mom and sis, combination christmas and birthday.  I've been threatening that I'm going to use them on all US related holidays, because Turkeys could have been our national bird.

I knew a lady that, whenever she saw something she liked, would write down item, location, item #, price, color, etc. and put it in a file folder that she kept for her dh for gift-giving occasions. lol

i WISH mr. goblin would do that! He is impossible to buy anything for because he always just buys it when he wants it.

My hubby is impossible to buy for because he is a car hobbyist (read: hobby as in disease pathology) and I know only that cars start by magic when you turn the key. I would love to be able to suprise him sometime, but there's no way on earth. He's always got some quasi-Frankenstein thing going on in his garage and even his friends are clueless as to what's happening out there with him. So if I want to get him something for "Christine" (believe me, I have a point here) I have to just hand him the bank card, tell him how much I intended to spend and cut him loose on one of his infinite car sites.

Awesome.  I'll just give you the DVD's I've bought for myself when you stop by!  I'd also prefer red wrapping paper, if you please.  I have some extra if you need it!

Sounds like we're married to the same man. :)  My dh's b-day is in January so he is offically banned from buying anything for himself from the beginning of november till the end of January unless he clears it with me first.

I have a notebook that has item info (size, color, number, store price and even a pic if I can get one) so that my family knows what I like.

If I didn't I would continue getting strange socks, sweaters with letters and apples on them, and once even a fry daddy from my mother who knows I won;t eat fried food. (She said maybe if I learned how to fry stuff I would like it)

DH and I shop almost exclusively online so we just send each other the links to for "gift ideas."

You can always surprise him with tickets to a car show. There's one in my city over the holidays and BF is bummed because he can't make it back in time. When we started dating, he took me to the car show. :P I also think cars start by magic and really, why am I pouring all of this money into maintenance?! (still a little bitter over spending nearly a grand last month on my stupid, yet beloved, car)

I have thought about that, the only problem is that we live in podunk, and most of the shows that show up near here require a major travel committment. I've sent him to shows with my step father in law, as they both enjoy them. Now that my son has gotten older I can send the two of them...
I hate car shows myself, I'd rather have gum surgery...
