Etiquette School is in session! > "Why would I want to do that?"

I Used This One On DH! And It Worked!

(1/1)

KitFox:
On-going saga of his horrible family is on-going. (My copy of Toxic In-Laws should arrive soon.)

DH: "Dad's taking me to lunch. I told him I'd call and see if you wanted to come."
Me: "Not really. Why would I want to come?"
DH: "So you can see my dad!"
Me: "Why should I visit with your dad? He's horrible to me."
DH: "He's not that bad."
Me: "I think he is. I'm not coming."
DH: Oh....OK...."

Hee! It worked!

FoxPaws:
Go KitFox!! :) :D ;D 8)

The thing about doing this with people who know the backstory (like your DH) is that it forces them to remember why it is you don't want to do that. Next time, if you really wanted to hit home, you could go into specifics:

DH: "Dad's taking me to lunch. I told him I'd call and see if you wanted to come."
Me: "Not really. Why would I want to come?"
DH: "So you can see my dad!"
Me: "Last time I saw your dad, he said XYZ to my face, and then told everyone else in your family UVW behind my back. Why would I want to subject myself to more of that?"

KitFox:
That's a really good idea. I must remember to do that next time. Thank you!

hobish:

Go KitFox! That is one of the best applications of that i have seen yet.
