I saw the video, and it seemed to me that Hugh Jackman remained in character while chastising the person with the cell phone.

But even if he had broken the "fourth wall," I'd say he had every right to do so.  This is live theatre.  Ringing cell phones and flash photogrophy are serious distractions that actors should not have to put up with, especially since at the start of performances audiences are always reminded to turn off their cell phones and not to take photos. 

And I can't imagine that anyone would actually be proud of being reprimanded from the stage by a famous actor.  It seems to me that if a famous person scolds you, it would make much more of a (negative) impression on you than if a theatre staff member scolds you.
