lewd quiz on facebook
« on: October 08, 2009, 02:09:33 PM »
ugh, I just logged into facebook to check it quickly and one of my FB "friends" had taken a s@x quiz of some sort on fb, making the results show up on my newsfeed, with an extremely graphic image to illustrate the results! I could not believe it. I promptly unfriended her. I had already been hiding her status updates, but had clicked to see the posts I was hiding... just in case I missed anything.

Who does this? What on earth was she thinking?

I think you maybe acted too rashly.  I think this is more a case of people not realizing that every.little.thing gets posted in their friends' newsfeed.  I've seen some of the results of some of these lewd quizzes, and knowing the people who took them, I think they were VERY mortified to find out that everyone on their friends' list saw the results.

Some of my colleagues have taken quizzes about controversial topics and posted the results. Not enough for me to defriend them. Hopefully no other colleague will rat on them or draw the wrong conclusion. I keep mine as controversy-free as possible, since who knows who can see it. But I do post things like my American Girl doll collection or my costumes that some people do not consider to be the best first impression, but that are generally tame otherwise.

The funny thing is, most, if not all, of those quizzes allow you to skip posting the results (I know I'm careful to never post them).

I generally "hide" the quiz from my feed, mainly cause I have friends who take billions in a row.

I hide my quizzes from my feed most of the time too. Quizzes seems to come in waves so if someone takes a quiz that I find offensive or inappropriate, I hide that particular quiz so I don't have to see anyone else's results if other friends take it.

I once took a quiz on Facebook about what seemed to be a harmless topic, which I saw one of my friends had taken.  I was shocked and appalled to get this incredibly racist and offensive result.  As someone quite new to Facebook at the time, it took a few minutes of fiddling around before I figured out how to delete the results from my profile, and I just hope it did not show up in anything else before I deleted it.

So I would probably not judge her on one quiz, but maybe if it seemed to be a pattern I might.

But that's kind of my point.  Facebook comes out with these "tweaks" and changes, and it's not always clear as to how to change it.  Before I changed my privacy settings, I was REALLY surprised as to what someone could see on my profile.  I can't be the only one!

One of my friends once took a quiz on what kind of lover she was in bed, and felt the need to post the results on her wall for everyone to see. She got quite the 'WTMI' feedback from the rest of us about it much to her chagrin. Ultimately, she and everyone else can post whatever they want on their profiles, but if it's something controversial, you've got to be prepared for the feedback you'll receive. I was hiding my political views from my profile for a long while because I was afraid of what others would think, but now I figure it's my profile and if they're going to have a problem with it, so be it.

I don't think this was unintentional. Quizzes I've taken are pretty up front about making you click a button to post the result on your wall (and therefore the news feed) and she had also posted a comment about her results. And this picture went waaay beyond your standard racy page 3 type image. True, if it was someone who was more of a friend in real life, I would have called her and asked her what she was thinking... but since this was a former high school friend whose status updates I had already been hiding for other reasons--who I had had no contact with until FB for 8 years -- unfriending seemed appropriate.

still wondering why anyone would want to share that with all their FB friends though.

They have a "friends" quiz section where random questions about your FB friends- asking "Does Mary have a cute butt?".  I've stopped doing this because you can see what people say about you and if you have enough points, you can see who said it.  Well, someone answered that they thought I wasn't cute- it was my future brother in law.  I don't know if its supposed to be all in good fun or not- but it hurt my feelings.  Apparently, someone also thinks I have ugly teeth.  I don't think I want to know who said that.  If you think these things about me, keep it to yourself- my self esteem is already crap.

I answered a bunch of those questions, but only the positive ones- if they were negative or could be taken the wrong way, I skipped it- which is an option.

I won't defriend him, but I no longer really talk to him any more either.

Oh, I agree with you. When Facebook made it's most recent change, I was confused for a while. Now that I have the hang of it they'll probably change it again  ;)

One of my friends is quite guilty of this. I simply hide all of her posts in my news feed. I honestly have no idea why she insists on taking the sex quizzes.

I had a friend who did something similar - probably the same exact quiz, actually.  I just hid that particular post, but didn't hide all of her posts or unfriend her.  One or two racy posts I can handle; if every single post becomes vulgar, I would probably just hide the person from my news feed.  But, I am more conservative than most people, so chances are good that a lot of my FB friends will post things I'm not crazy about.  It's not worth hurting their feelings over being unfriended, in my opinion.

If you unfriended her on the basis of one post or one quiz taken, I think you might have acted a little rashly. Your rejection will be noted and may well cause hurt feelings. As long as you dont care about that, there is nothing etiquette-wise wrong about your actions.

You can defriend whomever you wish, of course, but don't forget that you can also hide or block quizzes. (Since you already hid her newsfeed, she must have published the results. This option would have been available as well.)

I hide quizzes all the time.
