I know it's her wall, she can post what she wants.

She can post what she wants, but she has to live with the fallout. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can insult other people without consequences.

She sounds like someone I wouldn't want to be around. There's enough darkness in life without spending time with someone who goes around stomping on every little spark of light she sees.

The best way I've heard this stated is, "Yes, you have freedom of speech. You are not the only one who has freedom of speech, and others are free to ignore what you are saying."

She has posted things before like a link to overweight people on a video playing scrabble and she and her other friends made comment after comment about how disgusting fat people are and they made fun...

This plus the comment about the books - ugh.  Delete, defriend.

When I was in 5th grade, my teacher did something similar.  I know she got the books for free, but she still took the time to sort them and give each one of us a book that she thought we'd enjoy, rather than handing them out randomly.  She also wrote a quick note on a Post-it telling us why that particular book made her think of us.  It was a great gesture!

I think NN should be deleted.  If she asks, the OP can tell her that her negative comments were becoming hassles.  Or whatever she deems fit.  I don't think an explanation is due at the time of defriending.

On a related topic: The book my teacher gave me was something about dragons, and the main character's name was Jakkin.  If anyone knows the title of this book, I would love to know so I can go out and rebuy it!! I loved that book and it was lost in a move a few years ago!

It sounds like the Pit Dragon books by Jane Yolen:

Book 1: Dragon's Blood
Book 2: Heart’s Blood
Book 3: A Sending of Dragons
Book 4: Dragon’s Heart

Even if the books were free the time and effort of figuring out which book went to which student, then wrapping and labeling each is incredibly generous.

I would not want to be around her either. Or people like that in general. They drain the energy out of you. They are not worth trying to get them to like you.

Is this someone you know well? I would delete the comment, and her. Ridiculous.

This. If she wants to pout she can do it on her own wall.
If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care,
To whom you speak,
Of whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where.
