My Dh used this successfully

My oldest son has a friend who's father is unfortunately a clod. I'd be ok with this guy - Ralph - if it were just bad manners.... burping or not saying thank you or whatever. ( I actually know a guy who has less than stellar manners in that regard - BUT he's kind, funny and his wife tends to reign him in ).
Ralph is obnoxious, he is the one who posted about "jokingly" asking us to include his son on our recent vacation. He's pushy, intense and my very laid back, uber tolerant husband really doen't like him at all. ( This is really unusual - DH tends to like everyone ). Last night at a football game - my sons and Ralph's son are on a Rec flag football team - Rapph asked DH what are we doing for Halloween. Not much replies DH - we have pizza with our next door neighbors and then walk the kids around the neighborhood and then an early night. ( Ralph doesn't know our neighbors and we do not socialize with Ralph and his wife outside of kid things ).
Ralph immediately starts hinting strongly for an invitation to our house. He mentioed several times WOW that sounds like a GREAT time ( um - it's pizza and soda and a walk - seriously not a big halloween to - do ). He also mentioned this complicated story of how his son was meeting up with a friend and that fell through and how it's sad he has no one to T or T with. ( Keep in mind - we have fallen for this tale of woe before ...... turns out they wanted to go somewhere and dump kid on us - we like kid but still ).
DH just ignored it got on with watching the game and high tailed it out of the game without seeing Ralph again. It's becoming more and more apparent to me this guy is a user. it's a shame - I like the wife a LOT and we like the son .... but Ralph is a piece of work.
I am waiting for a phone call today with a tale of poor son everyhitng fell through can he come over and T or T with us. the answer will be - not possible - other plans. I had to tell DS12 that we were not going T or T with anyone but neighbors - because I will bet they have son call my son directly and son DS12 is super kind hearted and will say SURE.

That was great use of silence. The best way to repsond to pushy hints is to not notice. That forces the other person to decide whether they want to be outright demanding.

Pretty Anticlimatic .... never heard from him at all.
It's kind of sad, because DH and I are usually the more the merrier. We love to add people and impromptu host and if it were ANYONE else - we'd have said sure come along.
I could not subject my other friends to this guy.
Although the friends kids did nothing but complain when we were out Tot. They were tired, they were thirsty, their feet hurt. Since they live in the neighborhood - I suggested we split up so they could go home early.....
