Your list, your rules.  If he wants to start his own list, he can have his rules.  And since this is the second instance, he'd be gone from any list I ran.

I think your stealth marketer just ninja'ed you.  He's got you upset over something he did wrong, and any drama he can create on the list itself is just free marketing for him.

Tell him the issue is settled and that if it makes the list, he's gone.  If he's already brought it to the list, kick him.  (Maybe a samurai kick, to take the metaphor way too far.   8))

The first time someone used the phrase, "Thank God not everyone thinks like you" would be the last time for me.

Ask him to forward any emails he's received, just so you know who else "shows interest in being removed from the list."

I would also point out that his only contribution has been a problem, so he needs to find a better outlet for his product.

Since when does a moderator always seem fair, to every list member, on every issue?

I think you're 100% right, but regardless ... your list, your rules, no arguments.

Which reminds me: this makes his claim about wanting to let his product "stand on its own merits" extra absurd. It would barely be logical even if he did have some sort of rel@tionship with other members of the list, but he doesn't. It's not like, Ooh, David is so popular around here and everyone likes him so I'd better buy his stuff--all he's ever posted about is selling his stuff. So how would anyone be ABLE to be biased if they knew it was his?

Ridiculous.

Those were my thoughts exactly.  Letting it stand on its own merits?  Since he hasn't contributed anything else to the list, this doesn't make any sense.

The stealth marketing rule is very common.  Many message boards, usenet groups and email lists have similar rules.  I think you need to send him a message saying the decision is final, you will not enter into discussion, and if he does it again he's removed from the list.  And if he does it again, kick him off.  Or you could just kick him off directly.  But whatever you do, don't doubt it's the right decision.

POD - remove from list.  He's wrong & also being rude to you.

When will people learn the Number One Rule of any email list?  "NEVER p*ss off the moderator"

Sheesh.  Is it only obvious to me?

Remove him.  He's a jerk.

No real update, but thank you for asking!

I decided to stop replying to his debating emails.  They were just stressing me out, and I don't need to justify myself anymore about it.  I'm not booting him off the list at this time - if he posts another deceptive announcement, then I will.  So far, he hasn't peeped again, on the list or privately.
