Ice skates update
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:24:57 PM »
Hey all,

By some miracle, the second-hand sports store near my house actually had a pair of hockey skates in men's size 12....in reasonably good condition and NOT reeking of "unwashed boy"........for $29.99 plus tax.  They sharpened them and everything. :)  Oh, and I was actually able to find a gift bag big in my parents' room that was big enough to hold them.  Now my brother's going to be really surprised on Christmas morning.  ;D

Lol, let's hear it for CALLING THE STORE IN ADVANCE. ;)  I figured I should do that, because men's size 12 is a "weird" size (my dad's 6'4", and he only wears a 10 1/2), and most places probably wouldn't have it.  On an interesting random side note, though, the same store that sold me the gargantuan $30 skates for my brother ALSO had a pair of miniscule toddler hockey skates--for NINETY dollars.  Seriously.

guess they figured that they would sell the "little" ones first.  Like you said not many people wear a mens 12.

Great job on your "find"

That's fantastic!

$90 for a pair of skates a little one will wear not even one full season?  That's just insane!

Well, they were brand new, and I didn't see any second-hand toddler skates in the whole store......so, I guess for all those parents of toddlers out there, it's either the skates, or a Fisher-Price Meth Lab or something......and who wants to stay up all night on Christmas Eve assembling THAT?

I am planning to take Thing 1 skating this winter.  It will be his first time skating.   I have a pair of hockey skates for me...I'll RENT skates for him!!

$90 -- YIKES!!

This is why I am thrilled that our neighbors moved away.  They had four boys, and all four played ice hockey.  I will be thrilled if Thing 1 and Thing 2 like skating, because I love to skate...but I do not want them playing hockey!  It's one of the most expensive, time consuming, and dangerous sports out there...

But, what if they see other kids playing shimmy at a makeshift rink at the neighbourhood playground?  Will you at least buy them hockey sticks?

Hey, that's theoretically the same thing as laying a bear trap or setting out a deer feeder (can you tell I live in Natty Bumpo Hades??)...

Where I live there are no makeshift ice rinks, at least not that I've ever seen.  Our skating is done at indoor rinks, and it will be public skate time, so no hockey practice going on.  I would love to try outdoor skating, I've never been.

When they are older, if they decide they must play ice hockey, I'll support them fully.  But our former neighbors were talking about actively recruiting them.  That I didn't like.  We're signing them up for gymnastics classes next year and soccer sometime soon, too.  They've expressed interest in both, and I have less objections to those than I have to ice hockey or american football.

I have to tell you, as a wife to a 6'4" man, that size 12 isn't all that big.  Every store carries shoes up through size 12 and usually 13.  When you get to sice 14, it is more difficult!

Well, I had to get the skates second-hand (new hockey skates can cost into the three-digit range), so that's why calling in advance was necessary, and why it was a miracle--size 12, second-hand, in my price range, and NOT gross. Usually you have to pick just one, or two, or three of those out of four, but not this time. :)

I feel your pain... My Hubby is 6'5"  wears a size 13 shoe.... but the hardest part is finding jeans in a size 36x38!   Plenty of 38x36, or 36x34.... but 36x38 is so hard to find.   Also finding shirts with long enough sleeves is a challenge.   It can be done.... and I adore lands end.... but it is a shopping challenge for sure.
