Tagging Photos, but I've already tagged them..
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:34:54 PM »
I recently added some family photos to my facebook, even discovered how to tag people.

Today I received a request from someone who is a friend of my sisters, wanting to tag the photos I've already tagged of my sister and one of my sister and her husband.  I confirmed, not being certain what that meant.

When I checked the photos, I found what it meant- the sisters friends tags showed up on my photos, but with their names spelled wrong.  I deleted the friends tags, but then I wondered if that was rude?  But I keep thinking- it's my sister, I know how to spell her name, and it's the same name she uses with everyone, including Facebook.

And sister has seen the photos, and knows how I've tagged them.  Do I need to allow sister's friend to tag my pics?
That's my purse! I don't know you!

The only time I would see it as rude would be if they tagged the photos with a link to her profile because you didn't, if that makes any sense.

I don't think you need to allow someone else to tag pictures. It can be nice, but sometimes pics aren't tagged for a reason.

POD. It's your page, your photos, you decide it all.  ;) Particularly if someone else can't spell the name right!

So you had a picture of your sister, that you tagged? And then her friend re-tagged it with her name again spelled wrong? Why on earth would she even do that?

Would it put two tags with your sisters name on the photo or does that delete your tag?

Pod. I'd chalk this one up to someone not being familiar with using Facebook.

It would mean there were two tags. I had that happen once, I posted a pic and mentioned that I didn't know who Guy X was, and before I knew it, three different people tagged him. I deleted all but the one tag that actually linked to his profile.

I guess the reason there were two tags is that this woman doesn't know how to spell your sister's name.

Honestly, I would just never accept someone's request to tag *my* pics. If I don't want to tag them, and they're not *you*, then I don't want you to tag them at all.

If I chose not to tag you (preserving your privacy), and you wanted to tag yourself so people could see them, I'd accept.

But I would never let Person A tag one of *my* photos w/ Person B's name. Honestly, I think that is rude.

And maybe you should have dropped her an e-mail that said, "I took your tags off after all bcs you misspelled my sister's name--her name is properly spelled S-u-s-a-n   J-o-n-e-s; you might want to update your address book."

In other words, notified her, the way she notified you. But honestly, I don't think it's horrible that you didn't.

And maybe she doesn't understand why it's unnecessary to tag someone in that situation.

(is she creating an alternate identity for herself, using a misspelling of your sister's name, but all sorts of *other* details about your sister? Maybe see if Facebook has an entry for that misspelling?   ;)  )

Thank you everyone.  I'm not going to e-mail sister's friend, since I have no idea who she is other than a name on sis's facebook page. But if she contacts me, I'll just point out the pics are tagged and let it go.

How does a person tag someone using an incorrect spelling?  When I tag my friends, I type in the first few letters of their names and they come up on a list of how they have labeled themselves on Facebook.  That is to say that I never type in names, but select them from a list.

RE: Others tagging photos.
I don't mind this.  For instance, I took photos at my high school reunion and am not friends/FB friends with everyone there.  I allowed it when my friend (and FB friend), Abby, who is friends with Brandon (who I'm NOT friends/FB friends with), tagged Brandon in a group photo he's in.

One simply keeps typing. So either the spelling error deviated really early in the name, or this woman thinks our OP can't spell her sister's name.

I'm wondering if this woman thinks that if *she* tags someone in a photo, that photo will show up on her home page? Or that the "SusieQ tagged a photo" will show up in her status/news stream, so HER "friends" will see that picture, as a way for her to share it w/ people who are friends with her, but not with you?

I've noticed that as soon as I upload pictures, people are able to comment on them, even while I am captioning/tagging/organizing, etc.

So, depending on the timing, sister's friend might not have seen any tags on the picture.

Otherwise...she just sounds kind of clueless, in which case, she might just assume your own tag, the one you didn't delete, is actually hers, and may not realize you deleted her tags at all!

At any rate--not rude.

And people are able to tag without profile links--that's how silly teens are able to tag things like "Joe's rear end," har har.

Ah.  See, I'm not FB friends with any teenagers (silly or not).   :)

I'm sure, however, that you can imagine such a thing!  (The above example was, fortunately for me, purely hypothetical).

Of course you don't have to let people tag photos that you posted and tagged yourself. I wouldn't.
