Is this status update rude?
« on: January 11, 2010, 05:10:14 AM »
The "awareness" thing on statuses on facebook seems to be spreading like a virus.
I'm actually getting quite tired of seeing a news feed full of reminders of diseases.

Is this cold-hearted of me? Am I being weird that this is getting on my nerves? It's not like I don't want to hear about people's personal problems. If I see someone posting about their own personal problems or just "I'm feeling sad", I'm always the first to comment with hugs and comfort. It's this unpersonal copying of "awareness" stuff that is starting to get to me.

So today, I posted on my status:

Are you tired of all the awareness reminders of sad things in life? Well then, ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE! Put a Monty Python quote on your status and spread the joy! My quote for today: GET ON WITH IT!

Is this too blunt? Rude? Be honest with me please.

Personally, it would probably make me smile.... mostly because my husband is a big Monty Python fan and due to my love for him, I have watched a fair bit of Monty Python stuff.  My first thought to reading this post was  that I wanted to put as my status the quote - "Noone ever expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!"

Edited because I missed the word "Spanish"..... sorry - bad monty python fan I am....

Not rude- no ruder than the 'awareness' ones that people copy like chain-letter-viruses! I like it! I must change mine to a Monty Python Quote ASAP.
... it might frighten them.

Is "Get on with it" a Python-specific quotation?

I think it's skating a fine line, to be honest. It could read as if you're publicly saying you're tired of the updates of people who do choose to do the awareness thing, or having a go at those who posted that kind of thing. If you want to post something cheerful fine, but I'd do it without the first sentence; it could come across as judgmental.

Must go change mine ASAP to "Bring me a shrubbery"

Right now mine reads "Poets have been suspiciously quiet on the subject of cheese".

Nobody has suggested THE Monty Python quote yet:

"And now for something completely different"

or:

"It's"

I would almost start using FB now ;)

Honestly, I think it could hurt somebody's feelings.  I get a bit tired of reading about people's pets and I'm sure some get a bit sick of reading about my extraordinary nieces and nephew or my high risk job but hey - they friended me and I friended them.  You skim over the stuff that bores or annoys you and move on.

I think that any status update that complains about other status updates is rude.

This portion is fine:

"Put a Monty Python quote on your status and spread the joy! My quote for today: GET ON WITH IT!"

I agree with DeeTee and Sharnita.  I get annoyed by all the sports score updates that a couple of my friends post, the application updates that I get bombarded with by other friends, and the whining that still other friends indulge in all the time.  But I wouldn't put that in my own status update -- I think it's just as annoying on my part as their updates are to me.

Honestly, when I first read what you proposed, it made me roll my eyes and feel like I'd just been bombarded by retaliatory spam, which to me is as annoying as any other kind of spam.

This part is fine, though: "ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE! Put a Monty Python quote on your status and spread the joy! My quote for today: GET ON WITH IT!"

What is "Get on with it from"? I can't recall. I can hear John Cleese saying it in my head, but what the heck is it from?

I think you should put a more famous quote at the end, like "Go on, it's wafer thin" or "We shall say 'Ni!' to you, unless you fetch us a shrubbery" or some of the great quotes PP have mentioned.

But to be honest with you, it is a bit much; frankly if I saw this update I'd think someone needs to take some time off from Facebook to chill. :)

But, you have the right idea in general, to post something funny and non-awareness-y, I just think the tone is too admonishing. So, what about this for a status:

"Always look on the bright side of life! ♪♫"  <-- copy this to get the music note characters. They are also in character map.

Or if you really want to mention awareness:

"Awareness shmawareness. Now, I shall say 'Ni!' to you, unless you fetch me a shrubbery!"

I also agree with Sharnita that this is good:
"ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE! Put a Monty Python quote on your status and spread the joy! My quote for today: GET ON WITH IT!"

I agree.  The update in the OP is rude and unfriendly to people I'd think you'd want to be nice to.
