I've got to admit, I have a distaste for this sort of meme. They make people feel that they're doing something beneficial to society, when they're not achieving anything of the sort. I doubt that one single case of cancer will have a happier outcome from this, but people will think that this fills up part of their daily quota of "good things to do".

"Why should I pick up that piece of litter? I posted my bra colour online, haven't I done enough for this world?"

I have a friend who is a cancer survivor who was encouraged by it, as was my cousin whose mom is going through it right now.

I have to agree with raintree and familyfun. If the part about the awareness updates is not added, then the message the OP wants to put out is lost, and it becomes a Monty Python update.

And what is the message? "Ya'll are annoying?" "What you're doing is stupid?"

This is how it reads to me.

I have to disagree. An opinion on a trend that I follow, by a friend of mine, is still only his opinion of that trend which at most, will make me consider if I want to keep following that trend, but more likely will just be information for me, to know how he feels about this trend. I certainly will not take this as his opinion of me.

But it's an opinion on a thread with a "Hey, here's how we're going to make fun of them! Join in and spread the negative opinion of what people are doing! Yay!" attached.

Well, it kind of doesn't matter now because the status that Amava actually did post is judgement-free and really funny.

I actually did status "African or European swallow?" because of her too. ;D

Yes. (cutting the quote tree). And I specifically posted here to ask whether it sounded too off-putting and mean, and I'm glad with the honest answers I got. So it's okay!  :)

Like I said in a previous post, I have changed my status as soon as I became aware that it was too crass.

I didn't mean for it to sound like "y'all are stupid" though. My primary sentiment was that I was tired of the constant reminders of the bad things in life, and I wanted to see some happy things in my newsfeed.

I never had a doubt that you didn't mean to insult anybody - but online things can be misconstrued!

It's a fun idea for an online "game" though!

This parrot wouldn't voom if you put four thousand volts through it.

(No, I'm not posting that as my status, but I would if I felt at all inclined to post a status someone else told me to.)

You should put this post, in its entirety, in your status, for the sake of absurdity! ("I'm putting in this in my status just to say that I am NOT putting it in my status!")  ;D

Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries.
Tell me you statused that. ;D

My Python status has been up there for over an hour now.

Amava, I think the status you decided on is awesome.

Actually, I did yesterday! LOL! Today's is "Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government!”

I agree. People can take things in written word online much differently then in person. I think your status now is great.

How on earth can you disagree that it reads that way to me?

My dear friend currently has a cancer awareness FB status.  She was diagnosed with the disease a couple years ago and lived through hellacious treatment.  While I'm not one to typically post those things, I copied and posted it for her.  I don't think she'd think less of me if I didn't, but it seemed like a small thing to do for her.

In another thread, we talked about giving people the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe other people who post these are in a similar situation, where they're posting it as a small show of support for a loved one.  I don't for a minute think my FB status will cure cancer.  But if it put a smile on my friend's face, it beats the heck out of "Lori is eating a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with low-fat mayo and bean sprouts."

My status currently says:
ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE! Put a Monty Python quote on your status and spread the joy! My quote for today: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
This is Amava's status. It is not rude at all, come on.

Personally I find it hilarious.

It's four million volts. ;) ;D

Not on the one from the TV show it's not.  :D
Just checked, definitely 4000 in the original, didn't check other versions.
My bad!!

Maybe I heard a slightly different version, sometimes there were minor differences. Or maybe I'm imagining things.

I'd never heard of this, but this thread reminded me to go check my Facebook.... and what is top of the the list in my newsfeed?  Yep, this:

"Put ♥ this ♥ on ♥ your ♥ status ♥ if ♥ you ♥ know ♥ someone ♥ who ♥ has ♥ or ♥ had ♥ cancer! ♥ All I wish for in 2010 is a CURE! ♥ Dear God, I pray for the cure of cancer. Amen. ♥ 93% WON'T Copy and Paste this, will YOU 4 just one hour?!"

So that is kind of funny timing!    I'm not a big fan of these messages, so if I have somebody who is making them regularly I will probably remove them from my newsfeed, because what I can't see won't bother me.    I do that with anybody who puts up annoying status updates.

My friend statused this (to the letter actually) and I was so tempted to comment "88% of statistics are made up on the spot" but I didn't want to make fun of her. Maybe if it wasn't about cancer I would have because she and I both took the same statistics courses. But it seemed wrong to make that joke on a cancer status, especially when my own father has had cancer (he is better now though. Officially cancer-free :)).
