Updates from networking site I don't belong to
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:46:29 AM »
Someone in my Linkedin connections put my name into another networking site they belong to (which I've never heard of), I turned down that invitation, but i've gotten 5 or 6 'update' e-mails from the site in one week!  I disconnected from the person in LinkedIn and marked the other site's mail as spam.  I think it's pretty rude for the site to keep pestering me after I turned down the invitation.  Is this the new norm for start-up sites?  Are they that desperate?

I don't know why they do this either, but, I have encountered this also. Annoying, I know.

If it's a social networking site, chances are "they" are not doing anything, what you're experiencing is a invite bot...a program that cycles through the e-mails that were given to the site as contact info, and checks them against a list of current members.  Those that come back "no" get an invite.   If it's a legitimate site, there should be an "unsubscribe" option in the e-mail or on the site itself.

Some of these less widely known networking sites are almost virius like in the way they glom onto people's address books and send them emails.  The person who signed up may not even be aware of it.  There's rarely any conyent on sites like these, just farming for people's data.

It's called spam. You didn't consent, and you can do assorted searches and report it to the hosting ISP. If you're in Europe, you can also report it to the appropriate government department. You did not consent to them contacting you, you did not hand over your details, just because a friend did does not give them the right to harass you via phone, mail or email.

It's not just "lesser" networking sites. I have more than one email address, and Facebook spammed me for *months* before I finally twigged how to tell them to go away. They'd culled the addresses from a close friend's address book as he hadn't realised the implications of "have access to my email address book".
