You've been Google-sniped
« on: January 11, 2010, 11:53:44 PM »
So a large part of my job deals with mapping so I use google maps and the aerial photography almost daily.  Now we have google street view in my area, which basically means the google truck has driven down every street in the city with a giant camera and captured everything that can be seen from a public road.  Kind of makes you wish you had put in that privacy fence last year... but I digress.

I was looking up a site we have been working on for some time and my co-worker has been caught on google's camera.  The faces are blurred out, but it's clearly him.  He and another girl were in the middle of the road sampling a groundwater well.  If it were you, would you want to know that you've been google-sniped or would you be happier blissfully ignorant?

Making matters a wee bit worse, he's been google-sniped breaking company health & safety policies.  :-X

If he's been caught breaking company health and safety policies might it not be a good idea to point this photo to the company?

Had it been a larger violation I would have automatically forwarded it to our H&S guy.  I did, in fact, tell our boy that google got him and pointed out the problems with what he was doing.  Part of the reason that he didn't see the google truck to begin with is that he and his spotter were both looking down the well.  They were also standing in the middle of a street, in a heavily industrial area.  Spotter in place but spotter not paying attention.  I gave him a proverbial smack to the head.  Had he been a few feet closer I would have given him an actual smack to the head.

I would want to know if I'd been Google-sniped, partly for the thrill of the "Aha, there I am!" factor and partly so I could report it to Google if I felt it invaded my privacy in any way.
