You've Been Defriended!!!
« on: January 15, 2010, 12:25:27 AM »
I know there have been several threads where posters have asked if someone can see if you Defriend them on Facebook. They don't receive notice.

However, there is a new iPhone App that will basically tell you exactly this, called "Defriended":

http://www.macworld.com/appguide/app.html?id=378509

It says, "Once you've run defriended for the first time, this app then tracks your facebook friends list. Each time you run the app it compares your friends list with the last time you ran the app, and tells you which friends are now missing. Simple as that."

Do you think this will change how people choose to deal with Friends?

Personally, I wouldn't defriend somebody unless they did something that I'd consider cutting them for (the one person DH and I defriended was someone who was behaving inappropriately towards him in email and IRL) so for me it wouldn't make a difference if they knew or not.

I've only defriended one person. (I have dropped never-answered requests.) I don't care if he knows he's been defriended.

Wonder what happens if you block someone? That I would not want people to know about since I have (I hope this isn't rude) blocked my sister so she can't find me on FB.

Nope. Though I haven't defriended anyone. The presence of this app wouldn't stop me though.

My Dad has a lot of great expressions. One of them is, "Never ask a question unless you're prepared to hear all possible answers."

So don't run this app unless you are prepared to find out that seventeen people have defriended you.

If they got a message when they were defriended, it would make me wary of who I actually friend in the first place.

I agree. And this is how I run my FB anyway.  I dont' friend people that I barely knew in high school.  I try to keep my friend list small.  And I do defriend people that don't communicate with me.  If I don't hear from them after a couple of months, there's no point.

Sounds like an app to instigate teenage drama to me. I wonder if it is legal with privacy settings being what they are.

I was really offended at first when people would "friend" me and then never email, or seem to want to catch up. Then I realized, many people will friend even a remote acquaintance. I've had friend requests that I don't recognize; I can discern that I must have gone to high school with them, but that's it. So now I'm embarrassed that at first I was emailing everyone who friended me like they'd sent me a hand-written card in the mail or something. "How lovely of you to seek me out! I'm so flattered!" When really they were just racking up their numbers. Well no more! Now I just accept them and put them on my very limited list (they can see just basic info).

Can't see why it shouldn't be. After all, the app is only looking at your own data.

It wouldn't make a difference to me. Like a PP said, don't ask a question if you're not prepared to hear the answer.

I also defriend people who don't ever communicate with me after the initial friend request.  I always assume they'll notice eventually.  Usually they just try to friend me again.  Which I must admit is rather funny - they won't answer messages or respond to comments, or comment on anything of mine, but the minute I pop up in the suggestion box they suddenly acknowledge my existence again.

In a nutshell, it won't affect the way I Facebook.

It won't affect the way I use FaceBook.

We could all be doing this manually if we wanted..

Copy your friends list into Excel on 1/10/10
Copy your friends list into Excel on 1/15/10

Run a vlookup formula or something to compare who (if anyone) is missing from your 1/10/10 file.

Copy your friends list into Excel on 1/20/10

Repeat steps above.

The iPhone App just does it for you......

I can see the benefit of this app for those who have several hundred friends... but I dont see a need for it for those of us who keep their friends lists small, as it's kind of easy to tell when someone has defriended you.

I've had two people defriend me - my aunt (no idea why, but shes a raging *insert bad word*) and a "friend" I told to stop acting like a SS. I don't care tbh, and didnt realize it until I saw that my friend list was just a bit smaller. It sounds like just another silly app to make more money for iTunes.

I don't even see the point for point for people with lots of friends. If you don't notice they are not longer on your list and you are  no longer getting updates, I would guess that you won't miss them.
