The guy I defriended only posted when his band was going to be playing at a local club. I don't go to clubs outside the city limits anyway, so I didn't really need to know.

I've been defriended-and by someone who was a member of this forum at that.

It happens.  I once defriended someone after they were very, very hostile to me.
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

The people who are important to me are all there.  I've got a few marginal acquaintances on my list, but they're there primarily because we all play Farmville.  I had someone try to "friend" me who was a local real estate agent, and I had no idea who she was so I put her on "ignore."  I got the impression that she was trying to drum up business.

Bullet, dodged.

I don't put my political beliefs on Facebook, I wonder what the defrienders would make of that? ;D

They would then send you a contract promising them you would never have such-and-such political beliefs, and if you do, then you will be defriended.  :P

LOL!!

Lots of my FB friends are my political polar opposites and post things I don't agree with. I don't have to read the posts, nor do they have to read mine. No defriending necessary. ;D

I don't see the point of the app.  If it's a close friend or relative, you're going to notice they're not on your list, you're not getting status feeds.  If they're not so close you'd notice, why would you care enough to run the app?

I defriended the following:

  • high school classmate who kept making obnoxious posts comparing people to farm animals based on their religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation.  I did send him a private message about it, but he kept doing it, so I defriended him
  • A couple who kept posting their political viewpoints ad nauseum and when I mildly disagreed with one post, deleted my comments.  It was the wife who did it, but I figured no point in being friends with the husband either as he was cheering her viewpoint on in the comments section. It wasn't about their political views, it was about her deleting me for mine.  People can choose to use their status as as a soapbox.  But if they can't handle civil disagreement and feel the need to censor mild disagreement, then I have no use for them
  • 2 Friends I'd fallen out of touch with in offline life who made no attempt to communicate with me via message, wall posts or in response to my comments on their status.  And they didn't acknowledge my birthday. I figured the friendship had faded.  One wasn't very active on Facebook.  But the other was.  I felt kind of hurt when I could see her interacting with others, including mutual friends, but ignoring me.

As for blocking, I have several toxic relatives with poor boundaries.  They have been blocked.

If someone's just moderately annoying like a guy I know who frequently uses his status updates to request things for a popular game, then I put them on hide.  He's basically a nice person, so I don't want to defriend him, but I really don't care about the game, so hide comes in handy.

Meh.  A few years ago, it was MSN Messenger that you could check to see who blocked or deleted you.  No biggie.

I don't understand the whole onoez you don't agree with my views thing. One of my best friends is the polar opposite of me politically. Of course, we never talk about politics. ;D

Not agreeing is one thing.
But if someone constantly posts disparaging status updates about, for example, a politician you admire, it gets old after a while.
I don't defriend people for that, though. I hide them on days when I feel I just can't deal with it.

I've warned most of the people I've defriended that I was going to do so. Of course, 99% were former pupils of mine who kept on posting updates in gibberish (aka cellphone/MiXt language). I said if they did not stop, they'd be defriended. Then, the next time they did it, bye-bye. One girl wrote back in a snarky way, so I blocked her. As a teacher, I feel that one warning should be sufficient. And now she can write in gibberish all she wants, and I don't have to look at it.

I know exactly how many friends I have, and when I go to my profile, I quickly look at the number. If it's the same, no one has defriended me. I mean, what more do you need?

I once had several of my friends disappear and thought I had been defriended.  Then one of them sends me a message, "Hey, what happened?  Why can't I see you anymore?"  There was a glitch or something, it removed about 50 of my friends.  None of the ones I could remember to contact said they had de-friended me, I re-sent friend requests, which were accepted.

Unfortunately, I didn't have an exact list, so some people who were on my list before might have thought I de-friended them.  (There were about 8 I could never figure out.)  The problem with this application is that it discounts bugs, glitches, and the basic fallibility of technology and encourages people to view de-friending as a passive-aggressive or retaliatory act.

Oh yes. Well part of our not arguing about politics thing is we don't slag people on our Facebook pages. Not that I would do that anyway.

Wouldnt make a difference to me, I do think I've been defriended once (and have a suspicion it was down to his new wife - we were good friends in school, and I'd seen his profile through a mutual friend and I sent him a message saying who I was (on facebook under married name only) and asking how he was doing, he sent a friend request and we 'spoke' a few times and he mentioned he was getting married in a few months - a day or so before the wedding I sent a congratulations, have a great day message - then he vanished)
