Would this be wrong?

In such a situation, I would say absolutely exchange them for something the kids would enjoy.  There is nothing wrong with that.

This happened a long time ago, but it made a strong impression on me that has lasted over the years. There was a couple in our neighborhood who had two children, a girl and a boy, 13 and 11 the year it happened. The father was an accountant for small businesses in the neighborhood, but was losing his customers because of drinking. One year, my mother found out that the children's mother was desperate because she had nothing at all for her kids on Christmas.

My mom talked to my sister and me, explained the whole thing, and asked what we could do. This was during the depression, when good things were scarce, to say the least. My sister and I decided to split whatever we were getting with those kids, who were kids we walked to school with every day. We gave the girl a pretty sweater set that was meant for me, ice skates that were meant for my sister (we had a pond in our neighborhood park, and all the kids went there) and a board game, and my mom bought ice skates, an outdoor sweater, hat and gloves for her brother.

I can still remember my friend coming over on Christmas morning, just glowing with what she had received, when she expected nothing!  It taught me a lesson I have never, never forgotten......and it made me realize what a wonderful mother I had.

You did have quite a wonderful mother...and it was beautifully reflected that Christmas in both you and your sister.
