Well, this is interesting ...
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:07:32 AM »
Yesterday I received a Facebook friend request from "Edie," someone I haven't seen in almost 40 years. We went to elementary and junior high schools together and were in Brownies.

She said a reunion was coming up among the group of us who all went to elementary/junior high and thought I looked super, etc.

I accepted her friend request even though I was never particularly close to her. However, I found out she and Sissie have a mutual friend, and since I have blocked my sister from my Facebook,* I also blocked the mutual friend (Sissie's SIL, whom I do NOT like).

I also PM'd Edie to let her know I'd love to hear the details about the reunion via PM.

She returned my PM this morning saying it was going to be held July 10, they'd booked a block of rooms at one of the hotels in case I needed one, and "You look superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I can't wait to huuuuuuuuuuuuuug you!"

Okay ...

Edie and I were never that close. She wasn't in any of my classes at grade school that I recall (just knew her from Brownies) and we didn't run with the same crowd in junior high. We lived in the same general neighborhood, but we never hung out together.

You think she's feeling sentimental or nostalgic about me? I've got FB friends from junior high, but they were all close to me back in those days.

Also, since I have blocked Sissie's SIL, when I make a post (which Edie, as a friend can see), will Sissie's SIL also see it? And if she does, how to deal with the fallout when she tells Sissie (as I know she will) that I have blocked her?

*I blocked my sister on FB for various reasons, one of them being that she has done nothing but make fun of my friends from junior high on. They were never "high class" or "popular" enough for her tastes. She ridicules some of my friends to this day, and she was downright rude to Tim at my 50th birthday party a few years ago, not bothering to introduce herself or even speaking to him at all during the party, even though she was sitting right across the table.

I believe that if you block someone, you never show up in any of their feeds. Basically, you don't exist (on facebook) to them.

I'm pretty sure that nothing you post will show up for someone you have blocked. But keep in mind, if you reply in a string of comments on something (e.g. Edie's status or a photo), she'll still see the rest of the comments (at least I'm pretty sure that's how it works). If she reads a reply to your post (a post that doesn't exist from her point of view), then she might start asking questions and it might come out that you are there. Or, someone might address you by name in their own comment. So just be aware that you might be "conspicuous in your absence" if you take part in discussions that she reads, even though she can't actually "see" you.

I'm thinking of a scenario like:
Edie is looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.
John Smith: Yay, reunion!
(Scritzy: Is Jane Doe from Brownies coming?)
Edie: Yeah, Jane's coming. Aren't you looking forward to seeing the other Brownies again?
Mutual Friend: Why are you talking about Brownies??? John wasn't a Brownie.
Edie: What do you mean? Scritzy just asked if Jane was coming, and I answered.

And then, Mutual Friend has discovered you.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'll try to remember only to reply to Edie in PMs.
