s/o Am I Heartless if I don't Jump on the Bandwagon?
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:34:38 PM »
I've noticed an offshoot recently where if people think a subject is trivial (e.g. the late night talk show host battles), they'll post one of those "there are more important things going on, like Haiti."  This was also posted in another forum about transit service cuts.

Now the situation in Haiti is certainly dire and I've donated what I can.  But I fail to see how bringing it up in unrelated threads/forums dedicated to entertainment and transit helps the people living in Haiti.  And if these folks are so concerned about Haiti, why are they "wasting' their time not only reading articles about entertainment and transit, but the comments and then formulating their own?  What exactly do they think they are accomplishing?

Has anyone else noticed this trend? If so, how have you responded?

Ignored it and kept on with discussion on the original topic.  I know there are terrible things happening in the world, but I also have a right to live and talk about "trivial" subjects.

I've seen similar things on other message boards--for example, if a celebrity dies and someone posts a topic on it, you can practically count down the seconds before someone will post "Who? <eyeroll smiley>".  In other words, the poster cared so little about the topic they felt compelled to click "reply," type out a message, and hit "post."  Because they don't care.  ;)

Sometimes I'm not interested in the topic, either, but I just pass by without comment.  It does seem rude to break in on someone's message board/Facebook/whatever thread just to pass judgment on whether the topic is "important" enough.
I searched for nothing on the Internet and got 175,000,000 hits.

Oh & the Facebook part reminded me I saw it on a friend's wall.  She was venting about something which happened at work.  One of her friends replied, well, you could be a [insert her occupation here] in Haiti.

I just ignore it when people do it.  What irks me about it is that they're obviously engaging in trivial talk and activities too.  So who are they to judge others?
