What's in a name?
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:49:00 PM »
I participated in a discussion on a professional networking website.  For obvious reasons, we use our real names. The person who commented after me mentioned my name as part of her response, but got it wrong i.e. she referred to me as Nile island instead of Nightibis.  We can send private messages there, much as here.  Should I correct her?

N'ibis
Hey, can we quote each other here?

Absolutely.  Your name is your professional image.

However, you might want to take the approach of "did you mean me when you said 'nile'?  Because my name is 'nightibis' and I thought you might mean me, but you could have been referring to someone else."  Just to give her a nice out.

Ooh, that is a really nice way to put it! I like it, and plan to use it when people get my name wrong.
