Facebook (again) Bragging About a Sib
« on: February 05, 2010, 02:08:45 PM »
My brother will be part of an expert panel on a weekly segment aired by his city's local news.  I found this out from my mom when I was on the phone with her last night.  The first show aired yesterday midday.  I linked to this show on my Facebook page late last night, commenting that my brother is now a star on the small screen!

I congratulated my brother via email this morning, sending him the link just in case he wanted to send it to people and telling him that I posted it on my Facebook page.  He's incredibly angry with me, and I feel badly for causing it.  But was I rude?  Did I really have to ask him first?  It never occurred to me since the show already aired.  I don't understand what I did wrong, although I did apologize to him and deleted the post.

Why is he angry with you?  What did he say when you told him you posted it?

I don't understand why he's angry either...

"Why would you do that to me without asking?"

But it still doesn't make sense.  He's *on TV!*   Which means that many, many people saw him.  It wasn't an "invitation only" tv viewing, was it? I highly doubt it so he can't control who views his segment.  I think he is just looking for something to get mad about.

Perhaps it has something to do with some of our relatives in another country being on my Friends List (but they wouldn't have seen the post because of the time difference [I hope]).

It's not my brother's MO to look for stuff to get angry about.  Really, it isn't, so his reaction has me surprised and wondering what I did wrong.

Wow, I don't think you did anything wrong, but now you know for next time. He should have just asked you nicely to take it down.

I posted the first article my sister appeared in as an official firefighter on FB- I was proud of her! It's an online article, so it's out there, I don't think she'd be upset, but I don't think she'd want me to take it down either. I'm just saying it was a normal thing of you to do- you are proud of him! Sorry he reacted that way :(

I wonder if he'd wanted to be the one to announce it? Or maybe he's humble?

My sister posted an APB on Facebook as soon as I called her and my parents to tell them I was engaged. Two full days before I had a chance to get to my computer and do it myself. I was EXTREMELY angry. It was my announcement to make.

Not saying it is the same, but if he was really proud of this, maybe he was hoping to be the one to tell people?

This is what I thought too.

"To" him? What did you do TO him?  This doesn't make any sense!  Did he elaborate?

Yes, he's very humble, and he's the type that would prefer someone else broadcasting news like that.

I just heard back from him after my apology. His response explains the "to" him.  He was very nervous during that first taping and hated the way he said certain things (he thinks he rambled a few times).  He also thinks he smiled too much.  Yes, you can smile too much, especially when talking about car wrecks and foreclosures.  Regardless of how well I think he did, he was uncomfortable with that particular show, and he didn't want friends and family seeing it.  He said the today's taping went much better, and I can post it next Thursday.  He thanked me for removing the post.

It all makes sense now, and all is well.  Lesson learned:  While I didn't do anything wrong, exactly, recognizing how upset he was, apologizing, and taking action to fix it went further than arguing.  He also had enough sense to know that I posted because I was proud of him.

FWIW, he also told me his wife and he are expecting their third child, but I wouldn't DREAM of posting that on my Facebook.  That's their happy announcement to make (even though I just did it now on e-hell).
