Would it be all that chastising, though, to post a status update that says:

"MamaMootz wants to alert everyone that she won't be able to attend any sales parties."

But I don't think it would be effective.

I vote for the age-old approach to spam: delete, delete, delete.
Without comment.

I think you're right, it's just marketing, and therefore it's not subject to the rules of social etiquette.

Plus, deleting gets the whole idea out of your mind faster. (see "voting with my feet")

What about this modified version of Nurvingiels?

Hi Sandy,

Just wanted to let you know I can't really do sales parties.  These days we don't have the time or the $, and I don't feel comfortable attending and not buying something.  I appreciate your thinking of me but just wanted to let you know for the future. Best of luck for your parties though!

So, wasn't last Friday's finger painting session the funnest? I think I'll put my kids in the bathtub and let them have at 'er. They won't get anything messy and they'll already be in the bath, haha.

Cheers,
MamaMootz

I personally just ignore them, but they do bother me, particularly coming from acquaintances that have never invited me to a real social event.
I like the new version. It's more direct, and still very polite. :)

I agree with Toots and Audrey that a status update would probably not be effective.
If I had some ham, I could have ham and eggs, if I had some eggs.
