This might be a stupid question, but how can you (or anyone for that matter) wear clothing just out of the shipping package or just from the store without washing it first? It smells and itches.

I have a friend who gets a rash if she wears new clothing without washing it. While I sometimes wash new clothing before wearing, I don't always, and I have no problem with it. I've also never noticed a smell.

It must be one of those things that some people are sensitive to while others aren't.

My "little thing" for the day - offices that automatically schedule an appointment with you when you haven't requested one. My eye doctor automatically scheduled an annual appointment for me. I didn't plan to see them again until January, because I don't have eye insurance this year.  I don't mind reminders that it's time to schedule an appointment, but don't just schedule one for me and assume, 1) that I need it, and 2) that the appointment fits my schedule.

You mean they just schedule it and don't tell you until you get a little reminder email/text/call just before the appointment?  That's insane.  I don't mind the ones that automatically make the next appointment like my kids dentist, but they give you an appointment card right then and tell you to feel free to call and change it closer to the date if it doesn't work for you.

I think they're trying to be helpful because a lot of those once or twice a year appointment type places realize that they will get completely booked up without any space for their "regulars" to fit in if they don't go ahead and reserve a slot for them.  Even if you change it later, the idea is that enough people will do that that they can shuffle folks around a little, but still have a space held.

Yes, they schedule the appt without your knowledge, and you find out when they email you and send a letter. I receive reminders when I'm due for an appt from several other service providers, and I like those. I just don't like to be auto-scheduled - it seems presumptuous.

In this case, I ignored it until they managed to get a hold of me on the phone one day, at which point I cancelled it.

The thing that's driving me up the wall today is a collections agency that can't seem to get it through their heads that I'm not the person they want.  They started calling me two or three years ago, asking for a  "Darlene" (which is not my name).   I'd tell them that they had the wrong number (which, to be fair, is exactly what someone who was trying to skip out of paying back money would say).  They'd say "Oops, sorry, we'll update our records."   Then, the next day, it would start all over.

I finally got the BBB involved, and they contacted the company.  The company finally believed that I was telling the truth - or so I thought.  Things were quiet for a while - and now the calls have started up again.  >:(

I just called them to say, again, that I'm not this Darlene person.  I've gotten the "We'll update our records" response.  Uh-huh.  We'll see.

I had trouble like that for three years and finally gave my wits-end-manners-and-honesty-forgotten reply that Tony had died. They finally quit calling.

We got that on a monthly basis for a couple of years for some gal who must have had our phone number before we did.  But then it changed to same gal, but the phone number was one they got more recently.  After it had been assigned to us.  I kept politely explaining we had no idea who it was.  It stopped for a few years... until now.. I think.  I've been getting a message on my land line that pretty much says: "We are trying to reach (dead air where a name should be inserted).  If this is (dead air again), please call etc. etc."  So, either their message machine is broken or they're happy to talk to anyone here.  Not happening.

People making me spend fifteen minutes extremely stressed and heading towards panic for no good reason! >:(

I'm having hip replacement surgery in just over two weeks, and I got a phone call today from the office coordinating my surgeon's practice.

Woman from office (paraphrased): "I just need to confirm that you have had the [special CT scan they use to plan the surgery and design a personalised prosthesis] done?"
Me: "Uhhh, yes? Quite some time ago, I think, around July or August?"
Woman from office: "Mm-hm, do you remember where you had it done?"
Me: "...at the hospital, I think?"
Woman from office: "Oh, [name of hospital]?"
Me: "Yeah, I think so. I definitely had it done, because I remember that I had to clarify for the front desk that it was that type of scan, and then [surgeon]'s office called them and had them bring me back in a few days later for additional views."
Woman from office: "Oh, okay, I'll get back to them. It's just that we can't find your scans in the records or confirm that they were sent to [business that makes the prosthesis], and they need about six weeks lead time to make the prosthesis, so if it wasn't sent to them on schedule we're going to have to push back your surgery."
Me: "...what."

Cue fifteen minutes of scrambling around confirming the location and dates of my scans (I was right, they were on 31 July and 4 August) before she called me back.

Woman from office: "Oh it's okay, they found your records and your prosthesis is all ready to go, so you can have your surgery as scheduled. :)"
Me: "Oh good."
Woman from office: "I'm sorry to have bothered you, I guess it is a bit of a relief?"
Me: "Well, I'm already tapering off some of my meds in preparation for the surgery, and I'm really feeling it, so if you'd told me I had to go through all this for an extra four weeks plus I would have been getting really grumpy." (Unspoken: thank you so much for the false alarm! >:()

There's a good chance that Darlene is taking out new loans/services and is putting down your number.  I get that from time to time.  I'll get calls for a specific person for a few days, I keep telling them they have the wrong number, the calls stop, it happens again a year later.  It's almost exactly a year apart that they happen and some sound like a business, others like social calls.

I live in LA.  There's alot of self-important "snowflakes" here.  A couple of little things they do really drive me up the wall.

1) Your pretty fluffy bunny rat dog is NOT a service dog.  Don't leave her in a hot car, but don't bring her into the supermarket or restaurant either.  Some people are allergic and I know darned well it's against Health Department regulations.  It says so right on the door on the sign you decided to ignore so you didn't have to go three blocks out of your way to bring Fifi Snuggles home before going to the store.

2) Bike lanes.  Well, not the bike lanes themselves.  But the cyclists who decide they don't have to use them, they can drive their bikes the wrong way up the street, against traffic lights, in the middle of the road, on the sidewalk...in short anywhere the whim takes them, because the laws of the road are for the rest of us...and if they get hit while doing any of these things...it must be the motorists' fault, because of course, we all have to make way for them.

I know these are both "1st World Problems," but, they bug me just the same.

Can I add my mother-in-law to this list? I've written about her before, but this is just a small thing.

My daughter's first birthday party is this weekend, and my MIL doesn't like anything she's found out. THIS time, it's that we don't have decorative plates. I bought the nice Chinet brand, but no, they aren't decorative. Also - I'm not decorating for the party. My house is already decorated for the autumn season. She doesn't like that, either. Oh, well, and tough cookies.

It's not her party. She needs to relax.

Check your state laws about bicycles - some of these are probably legal.

- they probably may not require bikes to use bike lanes because bicycles are probably defined as vehicles
- wrong way up the street is still illegal
- against traffic lights is still illegal
- in the middle of the road is probably legal
- on the sidewalk is probably legal
- the laws of the road are for bicyclists too!

Our biggest issues here are the cyclists that want to be considered cars and pedestrians, when it is convenient for them. I want to share the road, but we have some reckless cyclists around my work.

Ladyknight, you've got that exactly right!!!!  It's not sharing the road with cyclists, but it is their attitude that they can ignore all the laws and demand that they get the right of way ALL THE TIME!

And, even if riding down the middle of the road is legal, obstruction of traffic is not.  Not all cyclists by any means, but many here in LA are spoiled, entitled, inconsiderate and selfish.  (I know, that's LA for you, right?)

This is definitely little, but I have such a twitch when it happens....people who repeat blatantly false misinformation about science/health, but you can't argue with them because it's "their body" so of course they know best...sorry but we all have physical bodies, doesn't mean doctors don't have to go to medical school for a reason, or else we would all be able to diagnose/prescribe/treat ourselves by virtue of "living in our body". Some things are just not true. I never would say anything to somebody talking about themself, but I can feel the vein throbbing in my head....

(I don't mean things that are still controversies or we don't know a lot about yet, but things like a person just imagines that evil auras are causing them to gain weight or something.)

I know many like this. Drives me crazy too. Especially when the advice is unsolicited, and blatantly wrong or completely out there.

Re: medical advice.

The people who drive me insane are the people who refuse to take control of their condition/disease. If you (general you) are not going to take care of yourself, I don't want to hear your constant kvetching about how miserable you are. Take your medication, do what your doctor tells you, if your doctor is not helping you, then seek another doctor that will!

Example: We have a family friend that has severe RA. They absolutely refuse to take the biologics that can help slow down the progression of the disease (and yes, I know they can have serious side effects, but at this point this person is not going to have any motility by the time they hit 45-50 if they keep progressing like they are). When I asked how the gluten-free diet was going and let them know that I would be happy to help them get set up for that, they flat out told me that they weren't going to do it even though the specialist said that they needed to at least try it for a few months to see if it would help improve their symptoms or not. They also need to lose a significant amount of weight, probably over 150 lbs, and it has been suggested several times by the doctor they consider some form of gastric bypass surgery, because the excess weight is greatly exacerbating the already severe joint damage. They won't even consider it or research it.
